Sizing for waist cinchers..

I just had a question for all of you gals who regularly wear 50s dresses and wear a waist cincher.

How do you determine what size is right? I know a corset you go much smaller than your natural waist and its not meant for the sides to meet but a waist cincher does. Would you go by your waist size figuring that you could adjust it in or pick a size less than your natural waist?

By waist cincher, I'm assuming you mean the non lacing up kind? Like a mini girdle? If it's that kind, then the fit is the same as a girdle as the elastic in them will stretch.

I remember you saying your waist was 25" so you would fit looking at a girdle/cincher with about a 22" waist depending on how much you want holding in. My waist is 33"- 34" and in girdles I take a 30"- 31" one. 29" is too much of a struggle to get on without the help of lacing like corset does.
If you buy a girdle in your waist size (25") then it will just sit on you like a shirt :)

If it's the waist cincher corset kind which just controls your waist and nothing else, then the fit is the same as it would be for a normal corset, about 4" or more depending on your desired waist reduction and body type.

With corset cinchers, they are easier to tighten too as they just work on the stomach and lower rib area with is quiote fleshy and lower ribs are bendy. I can corset alot tighter in a cincher than a full corset as you don't have the resistance of your upper ribs and your hip bones. Of course too, the larger you are in the waist, the easier it is to acheive a dramatic waist reduction as fat squishes. Leaner ladies have less fat so bone and muscle doesn't squish as much.

Those with broader ribs will take a larger corset size than those with smaller ribs too. My ribs are quite narrow so I can get away with wearing smaller corset sizes (24" and 26") than most other size 16's can wear whereas, one of my friends who is only 1" shorter than me but the same dress size has to wear a 34" corset as she is alot larger boned than me.

Officially, you should leave at least a 2" gap at the back of your corset to allow for fat and skinny days and to allow for "spring" (movement of the corset for comfort) BUT because corset waist cinchers are often worn as belts, they are often worn closed. I can close my cincher so I should probably move down to a 24" waist but sometimes it's nice not to have a gap at the back if I'm waring it outside of my clothes.
You have the choice with a cincher but it shouldn't feel loose on you, it should feel like you are getting a great big bear hug.

Chris, from your photos and your waist size, I think that you have small ribs too, so if its a lace up cincher you are after, then you should look in the 18"- 20" range depending on how adventurous you are are if you want to close it. If you want to close it, then you will probably be ok in the 20" one once you get used to it. With a 22" corset cincher, you'll be able to close it too quickly and it will feel "too big" after a while. :)

Wow, what fantastic information. I am going to save this for future reference!

Thanks Lei!

What I have been finding is a size "small" equals a size 24-26. If that means that it is for someone with a 24-26 waist, that's fine, but if its flat measurements, from what you are saying, i might be too small for it. Yes, i do have a small ribcage. I don't want a full girdle with the panties and a corset waist cincher might not be smooth enough with the laces. I am looking to get an extra 1" at least at the bottom rib. I know it might seem like a silly conversation to most folks in the world, and i needed to review if i am just being silly as well about it. Its only for a few very specific vintage dresses that fit me to a t everywhere else, so i am clearly not wearing foundation garments like i should be.

So if i were to do a regular lace up...the 18-20 size you recommend and if more of a recent waist cincher....a little bigger?

Chris

Is it that Australian seller's auctions for the waist cinchers that you are talking about? I've seen her auctions and the sizing of "small" being 24"- 26" waist is a bit ambiguous.
If those are the flat measurements of the thing (which by the looks of it, seem like it is), then it won't do anything.

A corset waistcincher shouldn't add too much bulk under your dress if you buy the correct size. Little corset cinchers don't have that much lacing in them anyways as they are short and I always wrap the excess lacing around my waist before tying it to stop dangly laces from hanging down.

Corset sizes have always gone (and still do) by the actual waist size of the corset, so modern made corsets use the same sizing as antique ones do (i.e. waist size of the corset). So even if you buy a modern one, still look for an 18" or 20" waisted one. If it's only 1" off you want, then you'll probably be ok with the 20" waist one but it's always best if you can try one on first to make sure it feels ok.
My sis has is pretty much the same size as you (her waist is about 26") and has narrow ribs like me and she can fit into my antique 18" and 20" waisted corsets although anything over 21" starts to get big on her.

Lei -

Those were exactly the ones i was looking at (you mindreader, you!).

I am not really anywhere where i would be able to try one on...there is no real vintage shop (or items that would appeal to the market) and the only place with underthings around here is Sears so i always shop for things like that online. The best thing might be to buy something after the holidays NOS and if it doesn't fit me, I can resell it rather than wearing.

I found this site has has waist cinchers and nippers:
http://www.orchardcorset.com/c48.html
They have similar ones like that Australian was selling. Check out the pretty Rago pink and black waist cincher at the bottom. It seems that with these ones that you order by your natural size (so you would order the one for a 24" waist).

My hips are way bigger than what the small size says, is that okay or does it screw things up for me?

It is saying a small is hips 33-34...

Yikes

Yikes, I don't know as they don't seem to have much of a waist/hip difference. They look a bit tubular. That is my problem with things too, my hips are 10" bigger than my waist (an even larger difference when I'm corsetted too) and modern stuff isn't made with that sort of waist/ hip difference for some bizarre reason. It's not as if women have mutated into looking like men over the past 40 years! :)

Your best bet then is too keep an eye out for something vintage or try on a short waist cincher corset in a shop. I know it's embarrasing, but alot of sex or fetish shops carry corsets. When I was in Montreal and decided that I wanted to wear a corset, I found a fetish shop that carried them and they allowed you to try them on to see what size you needed. Most of these ready made corsets that the sex and fetish shops carry are Vollers and Axfords corsets but they will give you an idea of which size of corset you should be looking for and how it will feel.

I have the same prob too with 11" between my waist measurement and bust or waist and hip.

I know it's embarrasing, but alot of sex or fetish shops carry corsets.

Nothing like that around here.... when I tell you we are in the sticks...we are in the sticks! hee hee. If someone opens up a shop, they would be the first ever seen in the county. There was a shop back home that catered to a mix of the biker, goth, and club going fashion niches as well as an overlay of Renassiance faire types and that is probably along the lines of what you might be thinking of... (oh, nothing around here like that either).

It would seem to me that something that would lace up would be better because then i could just not tighten it up as much around the hips.

I think you are right about looking for vintage and shortwaisted....

the quest continues....
