Skirt/Dress length:- feel so different!

This is another one of my quirky post and in a way a observation and question:-
Today we have the advantage of been able to wear styles from many decades, while I accept that their is a lot that goes into a vintage outfit or look, silhouette / style ,fabric, pattern/plain colours, and accessories.
taking the pattern and colour out of the equation, with my limited experience I have realized that different style physically feel different to wear.
I normally wear tee shirts as much as possible and jumper when it's colder so I am use to covered or bare arms.
Keeping a certain amount of modesty in the post I put it down to the length of the dress or skirt I feel more comfortable with a longer length lower calf or to the ankles that with my knee length Dior skirt which i feel a little exposed or naked.
I put this down to the fact as a man that I am not at the moment use to wearing fashion in just the same way as ladies and with time i will get use to this.
Or is it a thing that you accept that you as ladies feel better with wearing one length or another and accept it.

Wearing a micro mini today, I would certainly feel self-conscious. In fact, I wouldn't be caught dead in one, let alone leave the house. But in the late 60s early 70s I was not self-conscious in the least (not to mention much smaller) - I had great legs and it was mostly minis and platforms. At one job, I was asked to lengthen my skirt after having worked there for year and I was so insulted I quit. I had this habit of having to bend over to get my shoes underneath my desk... well, you can imagine and the big boss was born in the 1910s. They phoned and asked me to come back, but being the silly and proud teenager I was, I didn't. Ten years later, I had to phone for a letter of some sort to put my work records up to date and the first thing they said with a chuckle was "how short are you wearing your skirts now?!

I'm waffling - as usual.

I, like you, feel more comfortable with a lower hem line.

I own a few short skirts but I mostly wear them over my bathing suit in the summer.

Just about every skirt in my closet is long. Some of my long skirts are tight and pretty close to form fitting. The others are to the ankles and are like a bell or trumpet style. I even have dresses that have the full style skirt on them. About the long long skirt I dont like is the broom skirt. Too much country styling for me. But they were popular in the 90's so of course I had to have a few of them. I still have one that I bought from Express. It's a dark purple velvet and I love to wear it alot in the winter with my boots!!!

I was raised by my grandmother for the first seven years, so most of my style and likes of certain era of clothing comes from her. She used to wear long flowing skirts like that when she was younger and even when she kept me she wore them during the days of Monday thru Wednesday. (Non selling days she called them).

As for the feel of my choice. I feel free in them and the long skirts hides the lower half of my body that I don't like. I am bow legged and have small ankles so I to me there isn't much to highlight. I think my eyes and my back are my best feature.

So for me it's about the feel and how I feel in them in the long length.

Always pretty much below the knee - unless I'm wearing quite thick opaque tights and boots.. then I can just about cope with slightly above knee!

That's been the same all my life really, even when a sinewy teen (didn't last long!) I didn't take advantage as I was to into long dresses and skirts really. Wish I'd got them out a bit more now, lol!

Interesting thoughts...

I've found that I am most comfortable wearing my skirts slightly above the knee. I just have never felt comfortable in longer skirts. And it could have something to do with the fact that I came of age during the 60s and 70s, and all the hype about the midi and maxi aside, for the most part, the only people wearing skirts below the knee were grannies! It's a look I associate with "dowdy" and as a result, longer skirts make me feel dowdy.

I like the freedom of a swingy short skirt, with the security of black opaque tights!
