Slinky Hand-Crocheted Dress - Vintage?

Hi,

I purchased this dress at an antiques store and thought it was vintage but now wonder...It is hand-crocheted, lined and has no tags at all. Any thoughts on when you think it may have been made?

Thank you so much,

Debbie

Debbie, i can't TELL you how many times i've seen modern merchandise in antique shops ~ it makes me crazy.

we've handled some crocheted dresses, as well; it seems the ones that are tone on tone, like this gorgeous gold on gold, may have been dyed together for a consistent color. having said that, this could be from Bali, last week, or Bali 20 years ago ~ except for the neckline cut, it is quite similar to one we had about a year ago, or so.

does it feel like rayon? or a cotton? (looks kind of rayon-y, to me...)

I would be hesitant to sell this as vintage ~ however, it is a very desirable summer look ~ and easy for those skinny little girls to wear, dressed up with heels, or thrown on over a swimsuit.

I agree with Mary - antique shops seem very prone to selling newish things and oldish, they seem to think they know but fashion is a big and complicated area all of it's own.

I also agree with Mary that this is fairly modern. It could be '70s or '80s or '90s or the last decade - if you can tell the fabric content, it would help. It's probably made in India or an Asian country or home made/crocheted.

Hi Nicole and Mary,

Thank you both for replying. Ugh...well, I'm new at buying vintage clothing so this is a - rather painful - education. I had pictured a grandma sitting around crocheting this - what was I thinking - what grandma would make such a slinky little number?! It never even occurred to me that it wasn't made in the US. When I looked at the fabric I initially thought it was a cotton/rayon mix; it is shiny and now, of course, I am not so sure. The lining looks like some type of synthetic fabric - poly or rayon I think.

I guess I will list it on eBay and not my vintage Etsy shop :)

FYI - Mary - I just checked out your Etsy shops and saw that you have Mondrian-style earrings - coincidentally, I have a Mondrian-style set of earrings, bracelet and pin in my Etsy shop! ...

Thanks again,

Debbie

It does look newish 90s or later. That does not mean it was not hand crocheted though. There was a trend back then for bohemian looking crocheted garments. Cardigans, tops, dresses...produced with cheap over-seas labor. There are industrial crochet machines but I don't think they are able to crochet in the round like this. I think yours is hand done. It's very pretty but alas not as old as you had been made to believe.

Welcome to the club. I'm new to vintage also and I've submitted "missed the mark" to VFG more than once!

Welcome to the wonderful world of vintage! No matter how much you know, how many garments you've seen, you've not seen or learnt it all.

That's a big part of why I love it! I've been collecting since 1980 and still get exciting about finding things I've never seen before. We're all learning, and the VFG is a great resource for shared experiences and knowledge.

I had a crotchet dress, ca. late 90s or early 2000s, can't quite remember when I bought it, as I had it for a couple of years, that was machine crocheted with round patterns, though the pattern itself was a little different to this one - it was all differently-colored circle shapes put together, a little like patchwork.
