Hi, this is another flea market find and the lady told me it was 1940s? It is made of a base metal. Does anybody have any opinions or knowledge about costume jewelry?

Thanks all. :)
I know the C clasp was used around the Victorian times and the safety clasp came around 1910 and is still used today. So it is just very confusing to me.

I am pretty sure the modern safety catch is late 1920's not 1910. I "think" the brooch could be as early as late 1920's - 1930's because of the theme - but I have been unable to find anything exactly like yours. The head looks "early." If you google vintage coiled snake brooch there are 27,000 of them - including some from the 19C. but we know it's later than that because of the safety catch and pin stem.

C-Clasps can be found in new jewelry today. When you use findings to date jewelry you can only say that this is no earlier than...although you do not find really old style hinges in newer pieces and most new pieces do have modern safety catches.

I'm really not sure how old it is but you are safe to say it is vintage!

Hi. Wow! I never thought it could be that old. I think I want to start visiting reputable vintage jewelry dealers so I can examine it in person and compare to modern pieces.

My friend's mother had the same too about 2 years ago, which was she purchased in the early 1971's.
These are lovely ones.
