Hi! Can anyone tell me something about this label? "Sonia Inc. Gowns New York"? The dress is 60's, slimline, empire, back chiffon wateau pleats, back metal zipper. It looks couture. No pics yet, but I was wondering about the label. It seems like I have heard it before, but I am not sure. TIA! Angie:)

hello angie - that does sound fab! i'm not familiar with the name but with me that doesn't mean much either.
couldn't come up with anything.. but look forward to seeing a pic. maybe if someone sees the label it will jog their memory?

Hi! I have received some great information on the label now, but I will share pictures now anyway! :) Thanks everyone! Angie

That's gorgeous Angie, but you know you now have to let us all know what you have found out about the label! ;)

Thanks everyone! I was anxious to find out about it I posted it like three different places. lol! Here is what I found out (not in my words but a very smart person:

"Mme. Sonia did indeed do custom work. Based at 15 East 56th Street for a large part of her career (Sonia Inc was around from the forties into the early sixties), her house provided well-heeled Manhattanites with a lovely array of dressmaker suits, afternoon and cocktail dresses, and of course, evening gowns. She often premiered her collections at exclusive luncheons at the Ritz-Carleton."

It certainly looks like an expensive dress and the gold lame looks like real gold lame, not lurex or brass. Is it cold to the touch and not too wiry? If so, its real gold lame.

I was looking for info on this label and came across this thread, quite old, but I thought I'd share this beauty I found with you guys. That spot on the front cleaned up and came out beautifully!

gorgeous! i missed the thread about the stain, and i too would like to know what you used to get it out, as well as the fabric (silk?).

wish the photos of angie's dress were still available. i'm sure it was a beauty, too.

Nicole, I know! I love a dated piece!!

Melanie, I just backed it with an absorbent towel between the layers and used cold water with a dash of white vinegar and it came right out. I did have to go back a few times because once it was damp I couldn't see the edges of the spill, but it wasn't set in there at all which is very lucky! I would bet she spilled on it just about the first time she wore it and never bothered to clean it. Can't wear the same gown twice you know darling.

Joan, Me too! Sounds like it may have been somewhat similar to this one with the gold lame Jonathon mentions. Wish we could see it!

Lovely gown!

Sonia, Inc was the label for the designer Sophie Sonia Rosenberg. She started her own dress company in 1916. Sonia, Inc started in 1926 but there were several business partners and name changes to her company over the years. In 1935, she went into business with Gloria (Morgan) Vanderbilt and their company became Sonia Gowns, Inc. Their business collaboration lasted 3 short years. In 1944, Sophie Sonia Rosenberg reopened her business with the same name, Sonia Gowns Inc, which remained in business until 1956 when she closed shop. I actually have a Sonia Gowns Inc gown from that short period of time , 1935-1938, when she was in business with Gloria Vanderbilt.
