Soooo excited - must share, must share!!!

It looks as though I might have a few pieces shown at the V&A this summer!!! They're doing a 1960s exhibition, and were missing a few key pieces for it - I had one of those, emailed them and then ended up taking more up there!

I had a wonderful time there, it was so lovely just talking about the Sixties and she showed me photos of some of the pieces going in - then proceeded to take me down and show me some in person. Yes, I was in my own personal heaven. Foale and Tuffin after Foale and Tuffin....Mary Quant......I even saw the Mondrian YSL for real!! It's so nice to be geeky in a secure environment!

I was desperate to tell people about it, but didn't want to say until they confirmed what they wanted to use. I suppose things may still get left out, if it's best for the layout etc - but....yikes!!

:bouncy: I'm just bouncing off the walls a bit here, don't mind me!! :bouncy:

How wonderfully exciting! I am very happy for you and just a tiny (well maybe a bit more than that) jealous! Let us know more as soon as you can.

Ohhh.. Bounce away! What a great time you must have had, with all these great pieces.

So, what did they choose from your collection?

Lizzie

Well it was a John Bates minidress which started it all off.....there's an Annacat, a minidress by a Carnaby Boutique I know nothing about - but they were keen to have more Carnaby, a John Stephen hat, a Gerald McCann dress and some Cathy McGowan shoes! I got some very funny looks lugging them around on the tube ;)

OOOooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh, how exciting!!!!

Congratulations dear girl, it's just toooo fabulous for words!

And the moment all of these divine items go on exhibit I'm getting a train down there. Foale and Tuffin, Quant, and varied Carnabetian items, can't wait!!!!!

Wonder if they'll have anything from Mister Carnaby.. and more importantly, more information on Mister Carnaby as I'm *still* trying to place my cape.

Ecstatically excited.

I must admit, I was thinking of you ladies while I was there and how much you're going to LOVE the exhibition! I can't wait to see how they set it all out, (and how my things might fit into that!! eeeek!!)

I am seriously hoping that they are producing a book for this one - there's still so much we don't know, Marnie Fogg's book (although great) was soooo far from definitive, alas!

I get the feeling it's going to be a free one too - like the Ossie - hurrah!

Liz

I will definitely keep you all posted, and I would hope to be able to take some photos - if I can work out the settings for photographing things behind glass!! :puzzled:

:bouncy:

Don't get too starry eyed. It is still a business arrangement. You should be compensated for the loan, if not monetarily, make sure you are fully covered for all hard costs, insurance, credited in the catalogue/exhibition, and are invited to the gala opening if there is one. You don't want to slip through the cracks and be taken advantage of.

that is a very good point jonathon and one i have learned the hard way. I have not done anything so exciting as loaning to a museum but i have "loaned" things to magazines and been burned big time on one occasion in particular by the most well known mag of the lot that i was delaing with. I think at first, you can be so "flattered" that you will feel they are doing you the favor and forget that actually YOU are doing THEM the favor.

I would be very charming to them but still let them see that you are a professional and not to be used.

You're quite correct of course. They were very serious about the matter of insurance and the final paperwork should be coming through soon. I also have the receipt for the temporary loan, until the long loan papers are sorted. She showed me the forms, where I could indicate credit (or 'private collection' if I didn't want it)....the only topic that didn't come up when we met up was the Gala Opening question. I didn't want to push on that immediately, in case she thought that might have been my sole reason for loaning my pieces. I might see if I can delicately broach that question soon-ish.

it sounds as though they are extremely professional ( as you would imagine they would be!) and treating you very well. If there is an opening gala, you will have to let us know every detail! What will you wear?

Oh, as a collector loaning to the exhibit I'm sure you'll be invited to the opening, no question.

When is it scheduled for?

L

Don't count on it! Ask them point blank when the gala opening is schedualed so you can write it in your date book. They will either say that an invitation will be in the mail to you when the date and details are set and if you don't get it to call someone, or they will stammer and choke and try to think of something quick to put you off. If your collection is so valuable to them, then so is your presence at the opening. Also make sure you get a free copy of the catalogue if they print one, and that you also have the right to charge for images for publicity or publication, although you may want to wave any payment, at the same time, you need to have a copy of the publication.

I only say this from LOTS of experience. I could tell you stories that would make your hair curl!

Example one: A MAJOR New York museum that lost an item from a museum I worked at

Example two: A MAJOR New York museum that didn't send a copy of the catalogue or a thank-you note to a lender and still didn't once they were reminded

Example three: A MAJOR Toronto museum that didn't send a copy of a book that I had loaned items to for photography at the last minute they didn't have in their own collection and were published in the book

Example four: A MAJOR English museum that lost a loaned item....

I got more of them too!

Its a business arrangement, so make sure you get everything in writing.

Sorry to hear about those bad experiences Jonathan, I'll just have to hold faith in them!

If there is an opening gala, you will have to let us know every detail! What will you wear?

Now that, THAT would be a week long job in itself :puzzled: ;)

Lin, I believe it starts in June!
