soutache trim?

Hello,

Found this lovely 50s dress, but not entirely sure what the trim is called? Also, is this fabric considered sharkskin taffeta? Just taffeta? It has a very iridescent quality to it. Thank you!

Not so much soutache (which is a corded trim applied to the fabric) but a pleated ribbon. Do you have a close up? It looks like it's the same fabric.

Speaking of which, I'd call that "shot taffeta", and it looks like it might be silk, or if not, rayon. Could also be late '40s, or early '50s. Very nice.

Here is one a bit closer. Yes, it's the same fabric from what I can tell. It's a very crisp fabric.

Thank you, but I'd need a real close up to tell the fabric, I've seen that one already and it told me that it's a ribbon but not the composition. Never mind.

It does look like a silk taffeta with a ribbon work trim to me as well and I also agree with Nicole's dating.

I would like to offer a suggestion as to that heavy black belt you used. It is somewhat detracting from the beauty of the garment. I understand you did not get the matching thinner same fabric belt with the dress, that often happens where we don't get the original belts. Could you perhaps find a narrower black belt or narrower ribbon in as close to the color that you could match it to.

Thanks! Yeah, that's the only period appropriate belt I had on hand unfortunately! I will try the ribbon idea you mentioned though Should I try a burn test to make sure it's silk?

It would be good if you could catch a few threads from the inside seam to go ahead with the burn test.
