Speaking of Fashion Trends...Any such thing as the \"classic blazer\"??

Speaking of Linda's list of what is in and out for 2006, I was thinking of what are the types of things that are always in style.

Here

It has been said that the "classic blazer" is always in style, but it has also been said that there is no such thing, because each time the "classic blazer" comes back into style, it is tweaked a bit so if you have one from 10 years ago it looks outdate and the opposite of classic. the "classic blazer" in the 70s was a slimmer cut. The same thing in the 80s might have had a slight pouf to the shoulder, or if not, was a bit boxier. The classic blazer in the 90s was a bit longer and covered the full hip with a well defined waist.

So, in your opinion = the "classic blazer" - is it a myth or is there really any such thing?

I agree with you about the tweaking from time to time. I don't think there is a classic blazer. Look at all the boxy shaped blazers hanging on the thrift racks now. Nobody wants them.

I don't know, think of the trench coat, it has been in style I don't know how long, with different looks. I think they even have ruffles on them this Spring.

How about the straight wool skirt? I think a gal could do well to have 2 or three in her wardrobe and carry them from year to year, changing blouses or tops with the season/style.

When I think of a "classic" blazer, I think of the slightly tailored jacket, shaped but not too fitted at the waist, with medium-width standard-shaped lapels (not real wide, not real thin, not too pointy, not too rounded) and the bottom-of-your-butt length. Seems to me that look comes back around again & again and, even with tweaking, does not veer far from its base look. No boxy shape, short length, oversized or overslim silhouette, no poofy, puffy sleeves....

I think of a man's classic blazer as those navy blue, double breasted ones with gold buttons. They are so sharp!

the cut of the double breasted blazer has changed all the time. They were boxier in the late 60s, roomy in the 80s and now they are very body conscious. But true, unless you are really "in the know" about the subtelties and are super trendy it won't make a difference.

I think for me, the blazers i wear that seem the most classic are a few that i have from the 70s - ones where the lapels are not so big and like Anne describes.
