My little town had a big event tonight! A Living Windows display event, where all the downtown businesses had live models and events at their stores.
It's my Mom's brainchild, since she's the Prez of the Main Street/Downtown organization.
One of the sellers thought she'd like to have people in "old clothes" hanging out in her display...Mom knew someone who may be able to help (ME!). Since I've been a little creativity starved of late, I took the ball and ran with it.
We decided on a then and now theme, since the store is 66 years old. One side was a generalized 50's vignette, the other a modern one, since she has two great windows to display in.
Our little downtown used to be the place to get everything you wanted from toasters to hardware to prom dresses, back in the pre-Walmart days (don’t get me started).
I capitalized on that, and brought everything from Dad’s enamelware cowboy dishes to an old tablecloth, but concentrated on the lady’s wear. We collected up old packaging from the era, from the actual stores on that street, and I put in my vintage pieces. Even had a tie from a store that was reunited with an original box of that era! The storeowner had some hatboxes with her name on them, and a stash of shirt boxes. I had a couple of pairs of shoes (spikes of course) one in its original box and oodles of hats, hosiery boxes, gloves and hankies.
The ladies are wearing housedresses and plain shoes, thick tan stockings, some simple hats and cardigans…they are sitting on my chrome kitchen chairs. I was going for the look that they had gotten home and were resting with some Cokes while gossiping and looking over/wrapping purchases. They supplied the gossip!
Now, I know they wouldn’t wear their hats inside, but we were going for a generalization, sort of a common knowledge impression of the 50’s.
The modern side has bags from the current local stores, with new products from the owner’s store. It’s not as cool, but cute still.
Anyway, here are some pics of my little display:
I’ll just put these as links, but here’s some highlights from the rest of the blocks..
This kid's gonna be big some day
He couldn't be more than 16, but he was playing the piano and singing, and sounded like a young Stevie Wonder. I teared up a bit!
Some handsome young men at the snazzy menswear shop.
Talented young ladies at the cosmetology college, singing "Baby It's Cold Outside" like they were having a conversation between gal pals. All while getting their hair done and manicures.
A Seuss inspired Grinch in a sled, complete with a little doggy!
Nativity scene
Santa oddly in the opposite window of the nativity
Merle Norman as she started, in her kitchen making makeup
Ladies of Maurices the young women's apparel store chain
Hope you enjoyed
