Stained Silk

Hi everyone, yesterday a friend brought in a couture silk dress that she bought at a vintage shop in Barcelona. It's an AMAZING piece ~ hand beaded, floor length, detachable floor length scarf, but it has some underarm marks and other spots in the white silk. It also has feathers hand-sewn onto the gown, and I'm terrified of trying to clean it. Has anyone taken feathered things to the dry cleaners? Or do you think I can spot clean it? Eek!

It looks like its white crepe with sequins, feathers and rhinestones? That is probably the most uncleanable combination there could possibly be. Enjoy it as is because whatever you do to try to clean it will make it look worse.

Well said Jonathan - I agree. It's beautiful but I think any efforts to improve the condition will likely damage it.

It's stunning and I doubt the issues will diminish its impact anyway.

"the most uncleanable combination there could possibly be"... hee hee! Thanks everyone. It's a real shame it's stained, but perhaps some lovely lass needs an evening dim-lit wedding dress... wow would that be stunning!

Here are some options if you want to give it a go:
  • spot clean the underarms from the inside. I wouldn't touch the outside unless you were confident you could improve them.
  • Enlarge the arm opening to remove the stains if they were very visible. This only works if the current arm opening is small, and the stains small too. If the opening is too big it will look awful and reveal the bra beneath.
  • sew more beads and sequins, move feathers to cover spots on the dress.
