Steamer question?

I use bottled, distilled water in my steamer. If I don't run it out when I use it, I generally leave it sit and would expect to use it next time.

The problem is there are bits of little black grit in the open part where the water tank sits. What is that from? I don't see anything happen to the distilled water in the bottle even after I open it ~

It could be the washer (black ring) in the lid of the container. Sometimes the washers cannot stand the heat and will detrioate.
