After six years, during which he rose to sales director, he was head-hunted by a French fashion designer looking to set up in the UK. Marks didn't stay long. 'They said: "You'll be able to call yourself a director", but there were no shares and no cash. That didn't feel right.'
So Marks set out on his own, stitching his name into one-off suits before teaming up with a Paris-based designer, Pierre D'Alby, to launch mass-produced collections made in India. The pair decided to call their company French Collection, but a friend suggested French Connection, after the film.
There were some early disasters. The time Marks ordered 1,000 shirts, half with long sleeves, half with short, has entered rag trade folklore. When they arrived each shirt had one long sleeve and one short. 'I learnt I had to be a bit more specific about what I was ordering,' Marks recalled.
It was during the early 1970s, when the business was in its infancy, that Marks fell in love with Nicole Farhi, who was designing one of his collections. The affair galvanised the business and in 1983 the pair floated French Connection on the stock market, turning themselves into paper millionaires overnight.
