Does anyone know if Steve Madden made vintage shoes, like was he around in the 70's or are they reproductions? I have these super cute Steve Madden platform's with a wooden sole (I haven't taken pics yet, I just wanted to see if anyone knew if they could be vintage or not) - the sizing is a bit smaller like a vintage shoe would be, and there's vintage Steve Madden's listed on ebay - not that that means anything - so possible vintage, or repilca? What do you think?

i don't think madden has been around very long. 90s, i believe.

but if you can post pics - insoles especially - that'll help. prolly 70s inspired. there's a lot of that around :)

OK I will snap some after I'm done working down here - they have those plastic soles with the little lines through them...I think you 're right though, I don't think Steve Madden's been around that long either, they're cute though either way! :) Thanks.

From an excerpt from my next book: Shoes in Fashion: A history of shoe design since 1950

'Steve Madden got into shoe design in 1990 at the age of 32. His experience in retailing brought him insight into trends and Steve Madden correctly predicted the return of the 1970s platform sole in the early 1990s. After opening his first store in early 1993, by December of the same year he had gone public and by 1997 Steve Madden footwear was pulling in 59 million in sales from seventeen stores and was beginning to break into accessories and clothing. In 2000, Madden was indicted for stock manipulation. The company was not implicated and continued to expand but Steve Madden, himself, was incarcerated for 31 months. Having given up the title of CEO, Steve Madden continues to work for his company as creative director. Steve Madden also designs the L.E.I. brand of shoes for Jones Apparel Group.

Jonathan - you are THE BOMB!! :bowing down in worship: I am SO serious to, I'm in awe of you!

Please let me know when and where I can get your book when it is for sale becasue I MUST have it! Oh I love shoes, I even tell people about you - the guy on this website I go to who can look at a picture of a shoe and know it's era just like that!!

RESPECT...I have all the respect for you.

I think I've learned, that the black plasticy soles, with the little skinny lines are from the late 80's to early 90's...and 60's shoes if they do have plastic have checkers and 90s remakes from the mid to later 90s almost always have an exta little piece at the heel - but I may be all wrong so I can't wait for your next book!!

Thanks again! You rock!

I remember Steve Madden from my college days. Made a lot of "high heeled loafers" with really square chunky heels, some 70s revival stuff, and then a lot of stuff that grunge rockers liked. I remember trying on a pair of mary janes with huge chunky heels and not buying them because my feet looked gigantic in them. At the time, I was partaking heavily in a pair of 9 and Co. boots called "war games" (you can imagine what those look like - i still have them and pulled them out again recently). And I still have a pair of non steve madden loafers with heels - i'll tell you that they are only comfortable to a certain point. they throw me a little too far forward.

Oh I would love to see the war games boots lol the best boots I ever had, I don't know the name brand but they were canvas lace ups - they made knee highs and ankle boots, I hitch hiked all over BC in my ankle boots and my feet NEVER hurt - they had rubber soles and about an inch heel - oh man if I ever see those boots again they are SO mine... :)

I've totally made some mistakes with alot of vintage reproductions - but it's good becasue now I'm WAY better at spotting the real finds, these shoes are cute, but I won't wear them - the only heels I can wear are vintage, the angle if anything past about '94 just kills my feet - but if they don't sell on ebay, I'll just pass them on to my best friend, she loves her "care packages" from me lol

I can just point a camera at my feet if you want lol. Actually they are in the breezeway, not on my feet right now.

Sometimes its not the heel shape, its if the shoe is well balanced. There are good shoes made now, but they are a lot more money to find something better made. That being said, besides a pair of motorcycle boots and sneakers or swim shoes, the last pair of newly made dresy shoes I bought were around 1999 I think.
