STYLED BY, just what does that mean?

I've never had anything with a label saying that, but I was wondering if this was some kind of licensing thing? This brought to my mind a 1960s Spengler mail-order catalog I have. Spengler at the time was a higher-end mail-order business here - my mom remembers it as having been mostly out of her reach financially. It features a lot of dresses and coats by Jacques Esterel and Emilio Schuberth. In the introduction, they describe this as having a special partnership with these couturiers and that they would send their buyers twice year to their ateliers, to choose 30 to 40 creations by each and that they would then be "interpreted" by Spengler's own producers. This is an instance where I would think a "styled by" label would make sense...

Karin,

Interesting about Spengler doing that and thank you for sharing that. I would think in that situation, a label would read "adaption of" or "authorized reproduction of". Especially when the garment's label bears the name of a Haute Couture house of Paris. "Styled by" seems so vague to me. I did not mention it, but the labels in question bear a Haute Couture name.

I saw a video recently--Fendi, maybe. In it, Lagerfeld was credited as the designer. At the beginning of the collection designs, he gave them sketches; then showed up the day before the fashion show to make any "corrections." I would definitely call this styled by.

Good evening, Do you still have the magazine you are referring to? I am looking for an archive on the collaborations between Jacques Esterel and Spengler to date a coat.
