Hi All,

My guess is that this jacket, which has all of its original tags, is from the 50s, but would you be as kind as to share your thoughts please?

The below jacket has the original tags on it from Montgomery Ward. The tag has a copyright of 1949. It also has a Made in Taiwan Label and a Made in the Republic of China Label.

I am sorry that the lighting is bad in the fashion shots. I need to retake them but they should be sufficient for some help.

Thanks,

*~Eli

I agree with 70's; the fabric label & percentages are also an indicator of post 70's dating and fabric content laws which came into effect around then.

I agree with the coat being from the 70s. The label displays from the Made in the Republic of China label, which from my understanding really means made in Taiwan.
Here is a good explanation:
Also in the 1970s, trade with mainland China began to resume. There had been extensive trade with China from colonial times. Early Chinese imports are unmarked or marked with Chinese characters. From 1891 until 1949 their production was marked "made in China." but, because of domestic instability in China (the Boxer Rebellion, the Republican Revolution, regional Warlords, Civil War, Japanese aggression, etc.), there was relatively little trade with that country during that period. From 1949 to the mid 1970s there were no trade relations with mainland China. The island of Taiwan, however, became a major source for gee-gaws during the 1960s until it also moved on to pricier electronic items. Taiwanese production from this era is marked "made in Republic of China" or "made in China (R.O.C.)" to distinguish from "Red" China. In the mid 70s, trade gradually resumed with the mainland and their production is marked "Made in the People's Republic of China." In 1978, the United States fully normalized relations with mainland China and their production again became "made in China" while R.O.C. production came to be labeled "made in Taiwan."

Cool and thank you. Yeah I know Mod isnt 50s but the 1949 copyright thing is what threw me. 70s seems like the style and the label style to me as well. Early 70s, especially with that belt. Just weird to have that 1949 copyright when copyrights only last for 5 yrs. Could just have been using up surplus older tags I suppose. Thank you everyone *smile*

Hi,

My guess is that the copyright is not for the tag itself, but perhaps for for the text written on the bottom of the tag, with the company's logo and slogan. Also, copyrights are valid for much longer than 5 years.

That coat really screams early 1970's.

Very cool and thank you... as always you have been a tremendous help. Googling the phone number was brilliant *smile*
