Suit - 40s or 50s?

Another fabulous find from a secondhand shop in Montreal! My first vintage suit.

It was marked as 1950s in the shop, but the cut of the jacket throws me a bit - it seems rather boxy and looks more 40s to me. It has shoulder pads that are pretty thick, though they feel soft. What do you think?

Oops, forgot to close that top button:eureka:.

The skirt has little slits on the side, and while the jacket is lined, the skirt isn't. Is that normal? The cut is straight - I mean it fits tightly around waist and hips, but down from the waist it's straight, so not overly thight (no, no wigglin' there :hysterical: ).

Metal zip marked "Waldes".

Skirt's seams.

Union label in the skirt.

Label in the jacket.

Jacket lining (rayon I guess) and a button hole. I only saw now that the button holes on the jacket were made the same way as on my 50s tailor-made jacket :BAGUSE:. But otherwise I have never seen this kind of button hole treatment before.

One of the buttons, and the small top button that's normally hidden underneath the collar. Originally, there was a hoop made of thread on the other side, but it ripped when I tried to pass the button through :duh2:. No worries though, I know how to make a new one .

Yes I think early 50s to possibly late late 40s... it looks like it has double double pockets lol... breast pockets and waist pockets... or illusions to it?

Maybe late 40s then as this piece may be a little ahead of its time on the fashion end?

Great suit, and suits you very nicely! I think early 50s on this. I have a suit that I originally thought was late 40s, but after further inquiry & research, decided it was early 50s--the cut and length of the jacket is very similar to yours, as well as the length of the skirt. Coulda sworn it was 40s, but not.

Thanks for the link, Lynne. So it can't be any older than 1949.

Jluthye, the pockets work - all four of them. No illusions. A suit for a busy gal I guess :bouncy:.

I don't usually wear suits (or need to wear one), but I tried it on and fell in love immediately. I wore it to the theater the evening of the day I bought it, I was just so happy with my find. :bouncy:

Very nice!

I'm no expert, just someone who likes to wear pre-1960s vintage suits - and I find it quite common for them to be unlined (jackets are lined more often than skirts). It was presumed you would, of course, be wearing a slip with them ;)

Also most vintage ones that I have come across are only linned at the rear and half way. and thats the nicer suits... but wonem always wore slips, full if not at least half slips,,, So i guess what was the point lol
