Sweater resource?

Hi all,

I was just curious if anyone has a general resource for dating sweaters. I have now collected a ton of handmade sweaters that do not have labels and aside from the obvious ones I find them hard to date. I guess that is to be expect because you don't know if they are using old patterns and old yarn but I was wondering if there was a general guide to refer to.

thanks!

Most sweaters of any year reflects a certain style.. Mostly. Also, if it has buttons that also can be a clue. Much of this would involve a bit of discovery on your part, ie. Google, eBay, eCrater etc...

Wouldn't it be great though if there was a general resource? like showing the popular colors used and silhouettes over the decades?

Though I have never seen any thing like that there maybe something out there. Again, Google would be your best friend. Also contacting a few fashion schools. Maybe they could be of some help.

Thank,
Nylo

A good book has recently come out on vintage knitwear, you might like to see if you can find it.

I find that knitwear can be so hard to date! Knitters often use old patterns or old wool, or knit to an older style because it's for an older person who prefers the older fashions. I generally look for a few things: firstly, is it wool or acrylic or a mix? Then style, colours used and any decoration/fastenings - for these I use general fashion datings, eg, a short sleeved jumper is likely to be '30s-50s or '80-90s.

I will for sure :) The same author has one on purses too which I wish I could get but they are out of stock unfortunately.

I have the handbag book by Marnie Fogg - it is gorgeous and features some of the most incredible fashion photos I've ever seen - pics from the 30s and 40s that look so incredibly chic and timeless that I just wish I had the whole outfit that model was wearing. I love that book :). There's a a shoe- and a vintage fashion book in the same series, with the same kind of design, but by different authors. I love those too! Always a joy to look at. I will order that knitwear book right away too!

oh really? do you have a link to the shoe and fashion one? I can't seem to figure out which ones they are.
