Sweet Hat

It is encouraging. I don't know how many of us here have experience in millinery but it's a very labour-intensive practice. Whilst the prices on that site are high, they reflect the large amount of work and skill that goes into making them - the market for hand made hats suffers because few of us will pay the necessary price.

On the other hand, we're all aware that a similar original vintage hat can be bought for a fraction of the price! Every racing season we sell a lot of beautiful hats to ladies who are looking for quality and unique style without the couture price tag.

All the same, I feel for milliners: it's a tough living.

I was a hatmaker/milliner and yes I agree mass production and the demand for cheap goods has helped kill the market but that is a very steep price. I doubt there is more than $30 worth of milan braid in that hat. I'm sure it was coiled by hand but on a special sewing machine which probably took less than an hour. The finish work would add a couple more hours if it was all done by hand. There is very little millinery detail just those little bows. It must be a status lable. I just hope they pay their workers well.

It is adorable and their other hats are lovely as well. I guess it's like paying $1500 for a pair of high end shoes.

The problem is that shoes are VASTLY overpriced right now too. Only ten years ago $400 - $600 bought you a pair of top end shoes but now it seems double that is normal - its not in keeping with the cost of living or the increase in supply costs or labour costs - its just greed. I have 80s Charles Jourdan and Yves St. Laurent shoes, that are BETTER made than Louboutins, in their original boxes with price tags and they are $90 - $120 - a tenth of cost of a pair of Louboutins today.
