Tapestry purse - dating?

Purses are an area I know almost nothing about. My uneducated guess on this would be 60s, but I'd love if anyone who knows more could help date this. No labels. Thanks in advance.

I have to say though that handling it the purse "feels" older than 90s. It appears to have been handmade, but very well, which is a bit unusual for 90s. See handsewing on cover of the board thingy that gives it its bottom shape (not sure what that's called). Squeezing the board it feels like plastic, maybe. I'm a bit tempted to unpick the handsewing to see if the board offers any clues. Also I'm thinking the wooden frames (is that what those are called?) might be a clue. Was there an era when those were popular?

Ah that's a good clue! Yes, it does seem to have been handmade by a very talented sewer. That puts it pretty solidly in the 90s I'd say. Thank you!

It looks pretty good and seems like a handmade bag, This type of bag is now rarely available. By seeing this purse I feel like it would be 70-80s. This type of purse really looks pretty and gives an old vintage look who loves old things.

I disagree, this type of bag is readily available in thrift shops.

also agree that the fabric reminds me of some upholestory we had in the 90s. if it is custom made, it's totally possible someone used an older pattern to do so.

how large is it? it reminds me of totes that were used for carrying knitting projects...

It's handbag size, not knitting bag size. I forget the dimensions but I think it's 11 inches long. I concur that it is most likely from the 90s.

Interesting note: I ended up washing the bottom board (which turned out to be a bad idea as it was cardboard, not plastic) and through the wet fabric I could just barely make out words printed on the cardboard: "cassette tape" and another word I couldn't decipher :hysterical:

Yes for a small project it would work well. Small circulars or DPNs, hat or gloves or socks...

My knitting bag is quite large, but it has to accommodate man-sized sweaters from time to time.

I was thinking maybe the craftsperson had an old cardboard box sitting around they used... Who knows, if only vintage clothes could talk but that would take the fun out of trying to figure it out!

you know...that cassette tape remark triggered a memory... in the 70s my mom had a jacket of a similar sort of fabric...i recall it was easy for her to dress up or down, and now that i think of it, she wore it quite often.

not to throw any confusion to your query. just thought of it, tho.

Hmm... LOL, now that does throw a wrench in the works....I did originally think the wooden frames looked 60s or 70s. And as mentioned up thread, the purse does have an older feel than 90s. Maybe I should just remove the date and say "vintage".

LOL! That did occur to me. I'm familiar with the phenomenon, my father is an obsessive hoarder of cardboard boxes. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his are decades old.
