I have read (i forget wear) that is one rung below silk velvet but one rung above rayon velvet but i am sketchy on that.
Anything else important that I should know about it?

It's just different - not necessarily better or worse. Although certainly cheaper than silk velvet. If it's a short length pile, it's called velveteen. Velveteen can be washed I do believe, but like corduroy, it will pick a lot of lint. And it will crease. It looks a lot better if drycleaned.

Thanks Hollis

You know...I just said it was cotton velvet because the original owner told me it was because it was washable. how does one tell for sure? its not really linty and the backing doesn't say cotton to me but that might just be the way it is.

so maybe its velveteen then?

I have to do a minor repair on the dress anyhow - will a burn test be the only way to know for sure?

It looks like velveteen, and if I could handle it, I would be sure. But a burn test would tell you definitely

Yes it does, as a matter of fact...even though that may sound strange.

Luckily, i just sold a rayon velvet dress and could feel them side by side.
