I'm editing now - am going to post what is probably the answer to my question...

Howdy - I work at a hospital thrift store and sometimes they give me things to sell - such as this cut glass piece that came in. (Proceeds go to scholarships for nurses). I posted THIS THREAD on the collectibles board. If anyone knows anything about cut glass... could you take a look? Thanks  Amanda

hi...well it looks w..ell made..cant tell if its lead crystal or crystal as oppossed to 'cut glass it doesnt appear to be molded glass' again though without seeing it...

nevertheless the fact that it has a mixture of an opaque and cut surface indicates its not run of the mill, but dont get too excited as l can't tell from the pic. ...oh and its a 'bonbonerie' ..a sweet container in french...or you say candy?

have you looked up close with a magnifying glass at the underside? felt the rim with finger for tiny chips cracks? and checke dout thte rim for a name sometimes date?

Hi Amanda,

First of all, I don't know a lot but my Mom collected so I know a few basics. My gut feeling is that your piece doesn't look like it has a lot of age. Those birds aren't something that would have been used on an older piece. Are you sure that this is a cut glass piece, or could it be pressed? With a cut piece the ridges or high spots in the pattern should feel sharp (I have a piece that my Mom gave me that you can't even hold without gloves because it is so sharp) while pressed pieces are more rounded with less defined edges on the ridges. Something about your piece makes me think it is pressed. That's about the extent of my knowledge and gut feeling. Hopefully it will start you out in the right direction for research. Good luck!

:BAGUSE:Silly me, I just read that you say you can feel a seam, so it is a pressed or molded glass piece. Something about those birds reminds me of Princess House, does anyone remember them? Anyway, have you searched pressed glass on eBay?

Hold the press... (ho ho) I do need a glass expert... those seams... there are three of them. Between each bird in the bowl there is a raised scalloped area.. and right down the center of each one is ... a seam (?) BUT the seam stops when it hits the base. So this is "poured glass?" and what would that mean? Here's a pix of the bowl upside down, if that helps.

Looks like pressed glass.... I have some cut glass I inherited.... Its such a tricky field..... I have some old books on it and never seen birds..... Look for a seam then you will know its pressed....

OK - someone on the collectibles board says this is probably a bowl by Hofbauer (byrdes) - a glass company from West Germany that is no longer in business. And no - it is not cut - yes, it is pressed. It's hard for me to be certain because when I look at all the listings on eBay and elsewhere - my birds look much sharper and in more relief - but I'm guessing it's just because the others are not very good photographs? :BAGUSE: I also wonder if perhaps mine is an older piece, and the workmanship was better.

Ah well ... I'll wing it. Thanks for the help. Amanda

Excellent photos, Amanda! Hopefully you can get all the right KW's in the title and it will run on it's own. Otherwise, I offer you this one, and you can quote if you want: "That there's a darn prerty bowl" :duh:
