The dreaded FABRIC ID Question!

Hey, all!
I sure could use a hand ID'ing this fabric, please!

The fabric in question is on a dress, I think a 40's/50's cusper. Thin black fabric, has a *touch* of sheen to it. If it didn't have a second layer, you'd be able to see light through it, it's that thin. "Crosshatch" pattern to the fabric. Very drape-y/ fluid-y. It also wrinkles like a beast- had to take the darn dress to the dry cleaner's to get the wrinkles out.

I'm assuming it to be a rayon blend? Or not. :duh: Any ideas?

Here's a close-up of the pocket. It's the best pic I have for seeing the fabric, I hope you can see the detail!:

Thank you in advance!

Hollis, you're right! I didn't think to look, but the seams inside the dress are frayed along the edges. Good call!

I guess I can go with slubbed rayon. Does that help put a date on the dress, being as though it's rayon, would it be late 40's like I suspect?

I have had fabrics like this in the past to work with and while it is hard to id via picture. Have you considered a linen cotton/silk blend? Very fine fabrics from the forties were back for stablility and I have found very similar cloth that is silk woven as a linen in with the cotton thus the frarying edges.
Slubbed rayon would be my second guess though, I believe you could further define the material by doing a burn test on a few of the fibers. If it melts it is the rayon, if it sinches then I would go with silk.
What is the backing material like?
