The Enduring Popularity of Leopard Print Swimsuits

Recently I was surfing the net and found this pinup picture of the stunning Ava Gardner wearing an amazing leopard swimsuit back in the 50s:

I immediately noticed the resemblance to this Cole of California swimsuit, circa 1960s/1970s I currently have available in my Etsy shop:

I spent a few minutes googling leopard print swimsuits and saw current suits by Versace, Betsey Johnson and Dolce & Gabbana.

What is about leopard print swimsuit that has endured for so many years? Anyone have any ideas?

It seems to come and go in popularity. But for the past few years it has been very desirable. I never fine a good swimsuit, certainly nothing like your's which is really great. I do find leopard hats and they usually sell as soon as I list them.

Someone who sells...not naming....bought a suzy perette shirtwaist leopard dress off of ebay a few months ago and I've been waiting to see just how much she will get for it. It was really darling....

I love leopard print so much~ So edgy and sexy :drooling22:

I've got a tiger stripe swimsuit up now - if it fit me I'd hang onto it until a luscious leopard found it's way into my hands :headbang:

Great suit~ and animal/ repitle prints do seem to come and go in trends.

i do think cause they are such classic prints, they really are timless, and so many people love them whether they are "in" or not and scoop them right up.

even in vintage lingerie, the leopard prints do well with certain customers that collect and love the print.

what a great picture of Ava!

I just look like a tacky aging stripper (aging as in over 21 years old) in leopard print swimsuits, at least that is my opinion. I can carry the miniskirts off though...

Isn't it amazing? Great photo! MEOW! Here's a current fall 09 Dolce & Gabbana Ad, though not a swimsuit, it's still in vogue shall we say.

I personally find the leopard print thing very interesting - although it comes and goes out of trendiness, there are a few different groups for whom it is always desirable. It also really suits a particular colouring - mine - and so I'm always on the lookout for it. Everything I find in it goes quickly, but we have lots of rockabilly and burlesque customers (love 'em).
