The original Teddy Boys

I've just posted to my blog about the original English Teddy Boys. Ben Watts has produced some great photos of them, now that they're wiser, but judging by the photos, not tamed.

I love the images! You can see more at my blog.

Nicole - thanks, that's fascinating. As a youngster at the time on the other side of the ocean I thought "teddy boys" were the British equivalent of what we then called "hoods" in America. I had no idea about the fashion component.

Thanks for sharing this Nicole. It's a fascinating subject. Teddy boys always look incredibly smart and dandified don't they? Love those images too. Great!

Nicole,

Thanks for that. I did see these photos before and loved them. I'm a fan of the Teddy Boy movement, both as shown in English films and in real life. I especially loved the fashions, and used to have quite a collection of authentic men's Teddy Boy jackets, coats and other fashions, and let us not forget the girl's fashions too! Think of the early Beatles fans, but before they were "The Beatles"...they dressed a bit "teddy" but did not live the lifestyle so much. I think I have a photo of Ringo in a long Teddy jacket.

I sold most of my Teddy Boy clothing years ago to a film studio.

Thanks again for the trip down memory lane!

Nicole,

I remembered about Ringo, and he was indeed a Teddy Boy in his youth before joining the Beatles. If anyone wants to see the styles of that time, a great movie to watch is "That'l Be The Day", (I think in 1972?), starring David Essex and with Ringo Starr as "Mike the Teddy Boy". Worth a viewing!

Thanks ladies: it's great to know that I'm not the only one who admires these well dressed and stylish men! Thank you for all the wonderful comments on my blog - so nice to receive comments :cheer:

Barbara, I'm going to see if I can track down that movie. Sounds fun! Don't suppose you have any pics of your old teddy boy gear?
