I hope it is okay to post again but this dress is also confusing me a little concerning dating. Wondering if it is another "nod" to another era. No zipper - all buttons up back (sorry was too lazy to button them all!). It almost looks like it could be a wedding dress - a very simple wedding dress but would work. No labels at all but doesn't strike me as homemade. Needs quite a bit of TLC and want to make sure it is worth it. It is very prim to me...just two tiny cutouts above the bust area. Neckline reminds of a cravat - if that is right word.

Again, terrible with material but you might be able to get ideas from pics. Thank you again. Have been reading through boards - what a wealth of knowledge and insight. Again, hope okay to have two in one day but just stumped a little by both dresses.

THANK YOU!!!!

Hi,

I agree, wedding gown, and definitely 1940's. The simplicity may be due to Wartime fabric restrictions, not sure on that but the short sleeves, lack of trim and no train, lack of hem, do point to that possibility. The bride probably dressed it up with grandmother's lace, flowers from mother's hat or veil, long gloves, etc. Looks to be rayon "slipper" satin, but not a heavy weight slipper satin.

I think it might be very late '30's and it looks to me like rayon satin. The bodice treatement, all those covered buttons with rouleaux loops and the line of the shoulder with the puffy sleeve look like late '30's to me.

Definitely a wedding dress.

Agree with the others: definitely a wedding gown, I date as 1939-41 and think it's lovely! The interesting cut-outs on the front may have been sewn up a bit - if you look for hand stitches, you might be able to take them out and restore the design a bit.

You're right about the cravat (or ascot, as our American friends say). Such an interesting cut! Seems simple but the construction is complex, it was probably made by a professional dressmaker. Condition looks to be very good, with few marks. Will come up nicely with a dry clean.

I have seen tbis dress as I was the one who pointed Louise in your direction. Nicole....I think u might be right about the cutouts. Wow...always amazed by the observations. The dress is really pretty...Louise did really well yesterday! I am jealous!

I agree with the dating everyone has said and that it is most definitely a wedding gown. I'm sure Nicole is right about the cutouts--there appears to be seaming below them, and if you see that they've been hand stitched, I would un-do them and I bet the cutouts are designed to be larger and much more dramatic in result.
