I know, I felt for the women wearing such layers at the beach during a heat wave, but you can see that they seem used to what they were wearing. The hats seem the most challenging...always wanting to catch a breeze!

Not sure how many of you saw this, but the BBC had a wonderful documentary several years ago called The Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon. They were film makers from the early 1900s who filmed everyday people in England and the films were "lost" until 1994 when the were restored. So fascinating and very cool to see the people in motion and not standing still and people going about their everyday lives. If you have a chance to look it up, please do!

Thank you for that link, that was interesting and so educational. Like everyone else, I adore seeing real people in movement, going about their lives.

I agree that the back shot of the woman with the long braid is charming. My favorite is the two women in full mourning dress, complete with veils, jewelry and hats, just casually walking on the street. Very rare to see that captured in a photo, and the younger women is quite beautiful.

What a wonderful thing indeed.

And thank you to Tabbyannabel for that film information, I will have to find that.

I just spent an hour there - fantastic site, thanks for sharing this Maggie! Check out the royal costume ball pics from over 100 yrs ago - really amazing.
