I have several pairs of shoes that were purchased for events surrounding a wedding, such as an engagement party, and going away/honeymoon shoes that are all navy blue and wondered if there was a tradition relating to this or some significance you may know of?
Back in the "old" days - navy blue was a "Spring" color often worn for Easter. I have no idea how that ties into bridal or honeymoon unless the bride or attendant wanted to be "practical" and chose something they could wear again the next year.
Probably didn't answer your question but I've never heard of navy associcated with weddings.
What period are they?
I have a wartime economy book that advises buying all your accessories one neutral colour, so you can mix and match them through many different outfits, ie just one pair of navy gloves and handbag could go with all these shoes.
My Granmar got married in a white or cream dress with black stockings which looks really odd in the photo today, I think changing all the accessores to match a new dress or having loads of different ones is relatively new for us working people (working class) to do
I know my mother considered navy a neutral in the 1950s and 60s, because it went with a lot of colours - lime green, pink, pale blue, white, red... In the 70s she switched over to chocolate brown and bone as her semi-neutrals.
