the use of nylon (rainmac style) for 50\'s day and formal wear
just been thinking about this - afraid i still can't get anywhere near my vintage to take a photo today due to building work, but hopefully you'll know what i mean!
i've bought 2 dresses from the same seller within the last couple of months, and i am guesing they rae from the same estate due to the fabrics used.
the first is a nylon type, semi opaque with sort of rubberised flocking in mint green. i'm guessing at late 40's or early 50's, ruhed bust and full skirts, back metal zip.
second is a really pretty day dress, which from the photograph i took to be a sheer printed organdy or similar -yet again turned out to actually be totaly nylon...plastic almost. semi opaque with a print in block colour. sweet though, a full skirted shirtwaister with lantern style sleeves, peter pan collar and velvet covered metal buttons.so i think late 40's - it is nicely done with bra strap restrainers (what's the proper name, gone blank!)
anyway , my question is how commonplace is it? i would lose a ton of weight if i wore it regularly i'm sure... i know the invention of all the wonderfabrics in the forties/fifties would acount for this type of dress' existence but would everyone have been walking around waterproofed for a time? i only have one other dress which is similar, a 50's sun dress (but sleeveless, which i think is a bit more sensible!)
