The Women - costumes by Adrian

Last night I finally watched the 1939 Cukor film "The Women".

In case you haven't seen it yet, the fashions are wonderful - especially an entire fashion parade by Adrian. It's the only scene in colour and it packs a stylistic punch.

1939 is an interesting year for fashion - there's a level of nostalgia but also of forward thinking. Several of the costumes in the film pre-empted of the styles that would come after the war, in particular in the last scene there are ballgowns that look similar to 1950s styles. It's not on the clip above but I love Joan Crawford's gold sequin gown.

I encourage you to see the whole film if you can.

Oh, WOW!! A friend of mine lent me her DVD of this earlier this year. I had never seen it and did not know there was a color segment in the film, let alone a fashion show.

The fashion show was :fainting: :christmastree: :fainting:

I did not like all the catty behaviour, but who cares! I just focused on all the fabulous fashion and period decor of the entire glamourous spectacle.

Yes I always thought Rosalyn Russells black party dress looked very 50s.

Maybe if not for the war years, the 50s would have arrived much sooner.

holy molly! amazinig!!!!!

love the use of molded plastic to hold hair in place lol!

I think my favorites are the white and red evening gown with matching cape and the white and gold one towards the end with the overly large jacket..... delicious!

One of my favourite films ever - not just for the fashion, but as a whole! I saw it on stage as the play it originally was first, at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with a great cast, so I went to the local video shop and loaned the DVD later at home, and fell in love with the film too.
The fashions are amazing, no question. I love that suit with the black skirt and the green jacket - and the one in orange and this rust red. Divine!

One of my all time favorite movies, too. I've rented it from Netflix a few times.

Your comments about some of the clothes resembling '50's styles is very interesting. Many very late '30's clothes are very "classic" and if you didn't have a way to date them you would think they were later. If you have the Everyday Fashions series from Sear's look at 1939. The coats, suits and skirts in particular look much later!

I think I am going to have to break down and get Netflix...
Gorgeous clip, thanks for sharing that Nicole. And that image is swoon worthy.

Adrian did the costumes for Wizard of Oz, something I learned today.
