This dress both scares me & frustrates me... who can tell me what the heck is going on?

Hi,

Wow, I'm SO super happy I left all the "hard" stuff 'til the end ;)
Anyhoooooooo the fabric on this dress seriously feels like a windbreaker. It's only redeaming quality is that I don't think it wrinkles.
What year? What style?

I don't know, this is giving me a 60s vibe. Maybe late 60s, early 70s?

It's saying mid to late 60s to me. Not sure on a name for the style.

This sort of thing always looks better on a person than a manni if that makes any sense. They can be quite cute in a playful kind of a way, nice and smart with high heels and a box handbag. Thers's something almost air-hostessy about it.

The side photo shows it's assets off best. It's a nice flattering girly shape and pleats are always fab if you've got a nice pair of legs.

For a 60s girl with some curves when the geometric fashions just won't do a thing for your figure and you need something more feminine.

It's a bit much with the jacket though for wearing in the modern age isn't it? (says me that goes out in all sorts of far out combinations, LOL!)

I had a dress very like this that I wasn't too sure about until I took the hem up rather a lot and stopped wearing the jacket and it got a lot of lovely comments.

I got a lot of use out of the jacket worn with other things too until my chest got too big for it. LOL! I think I'm something of a female phenomenon at the moment - my waistline has shrunk but my chest has got bigger! LOL!

If you can i would show an alternate view of the jacket with a pair of jeans.
Someone may get attached to it in that way and get the idea of wearing both pieces seperately.

Don't you like it though when you can say something looks better on a real person than a manniquin? it is so often the other way around.

Senti, if you can figure out how you did this, write a book and make a large fortune!

late 60's then sounds right - i always get confused when i begin to actually remember the style of clothes being worn. and having relatives that were wearing this style of dress well into the early 80's just proves how unfashionable they must have been, god bless 'em.
;)

You're totally right Senti, I think this dress is def going to come alive on someone. I really like the one side pic too, since the other ones don't show off the pleats as much :)
And yes, please write a book on the whole, "smaller waist, bigger boobs", I'd buy a copy! ;)

Thanks everyone for the awesome help!

LOL! I know how I did it and I'm not recommending the process to anyone, it's totally not worth it. Bad experience, lost tonnes of weight in a great hurry, became rather fond of brandy and then eventually started geting my curves back with the help of excessive chocolate cake. :-)

...I think the only repeatable thing I did that might have helped is to drink more brandy and also dance more. Brandy puts on the weight but dancing (like a cross between a Latin American dance competitor and a go-go dancer if you're anything like me!) keeps the waist and hips toned. :-)

Having said all that, the things some women do these days to achieve a decent shape, maybe my experience isn't so bad! LOL!

I love my shape at the moment... but it's starting to really get to me that I can't find any skirts or trousers for women with a small waist and curvy hips. Do women only come in straight up and down shapes these days? I'm wearing out all my a-line skirts and am fed up of belts over trousers with scrunched up waistlines! Bring back the 1950s! I need hourglass clothes fast!

The other sure way to a tiny waist is have oral surgery and not be able to eat solids or be too knocked out to for a week. Not pleasant but it works.

Senti...you are preaching to the choir here. I have great dificulty finding pants in the stores myself. sometime you just want a pair of pants to wear knocking around. I tend to keep a pair of jeans for years and years when i find a pair that fits and wear them until they are thread bare and have to become shorts because of it.

I think i found the reason why one day. A woman who went to the same hairdresser as me was a fit model at one time (in the recent past 90s to early 2000s) for a clothing company or a designer and she was built like my mannequin. Actually, probably a little less curvy. She was very fit, but she was taller than average and did not have much in the curve department. She was balanced, not short or long waisted, etc, but it certainly did not bode very well for women who were not built like her. Oh well, the more they design clothing that way, the more i need to buy vintage.

I always am looking for vintage pants, shorts and miniskirts. (as they are not too mini on me). But not too many people sell them.

I'm convinced this is why items from the 50's always sell so well. Even when the trends are for other era's you can still sell your 50's stuff. They liked curvy gals back then and it shows.

I'm another one who lives for summer so I can wear my skirts all the time. I think my friends think I'm being girly but really its just that skirts are more comfy and look more attractive on me.

Here's to curvy girls!:headbang:
