This era always befuddles me...

Hello everyone,
I am trying to list things for two weeks from now so things will go up as I am on my trip! Have a question on this dress.
I know so very little of the 20s and 30s but I just could not resist this dress. Medium weight silk satin, deep brick red appliques with gold (maybe copper) thread accents. First thing I thought of was 1920s, it is completely straight cut with side ties. No closure except to slip over the head and the length (after I took out the hem that is) seems 1920s to my less then knowledgable 20s mind. The sleeves have me a bit confused though. Straight and fairly skimming but the cuff is edged in what the hem is edged in with a delicate gather at the seam and a small snap for closure. Is this more like a 1930s treatment?
Also the seams near the hem have a pulling to them, when held up to the light they are pulled but not shattered in anyway. Does this make this dress undesirable or less desirable?
For my own understanding. I see this originally worn with cloche down far on the head, perhaps the kind that is longer on one side then the other with a wave of hair peeking out, stockings accented with some embroidery and lace up delicate heeled silk shoes..
Is this an evening on the town or a day to evening dress?

I quite love it!

Michelle

Nice dress! I'd say early 20s, maybe 1923 - 4? Too long and straight for later. The hemming up would have taken place as hems grew shorter - I see this alot. This would be great with a wide brim cloche. I would also say it's an afternoon to dinner dress.

The pulled seams are a bit of a detraction, but not terrible if they aren't too obvious.

Thank you Hollis, I really try to stay with what I know but it is getting too close to hallows eve and did not want this going to costume.. So I rescued it!
There is little detraction in the seams, you have to hold them up to the light to notice it but I am going to suggest re-sewing the seams near the hem to strengthen them. I dare not do it myself!

Thank you for the help, much appreciated!
