This just in: Natalie Portman in Madeleine Vionnet

Just been trawling the web and found this one. :)

Thanks for sharing. This should create a buzz!

I think the dress and the whole look doesn't work for her very well. She looks like a schoolgirl with her hair like that too. Almost like a teenager wearing her mom's dress. And I am going against the grain here, but I think the dress is kind of unattractive with the tacky gold cuffs and collar....blah....the length is youthful, but the top part would look better on an older woman?

I ADORE Vionnet, but I prefer more the pre 1960 designs.

I am still down with a cold, so I am critical and grumpy today.

Since this dress is not at all "typical" of what I think of as Vionnet, I just did a search and discovered that the first collection under the Madeleine Vionnet label in 67 years was issued in 2007. Vionnet closed before WWII:

The dress reminds me of newer St. John pieces - which I am not fond of! I don't think the ruffled hemline works with the collar, sleeves, etc. The whole design seems inconsistent.

I don't think the shoes and handbag work with the dress, but I like her hair. (That's how I wear mine....)

Linn,

Oh you look darling in that hairstyle! Too funny! I wear mine back also sometimes.

Thanks for the reminder on when Vionnet closed her business. I could not recall anything off the top of my head when I left that comment, just knew that I only liked the really old designs and could not recall seeing anything post 1950's (now I see it is 1939, duh). I did not even know there WAS a Vionnet line today, which was surprising to me.

The stuff we learn here!

I also agree that a bit of glamor is always welcome.

I just sold some accessories to the outgoing CEO of the new Vionnet - the recent history is interesting reading.

Bucking the trend a little here. I like this dress until I get to stupid hem. When I saw first picture I expected I would see a straight floor length dress. If that were the case, I would love the dress. Just me of course.

Looking again, I was really getting a maternity feel from it which I suppose makes some sense. That hem length would help the dress fall in a way to hide any little bump she might have. Not saying it is maternity dress but wondering if why she chose.

I also liked it until I saw the hemline. The dress as a whole seems disconnected as far as design aspects are concerned. BUT! I do like seeing long sleeves on a dress suitable for a gala event. Maybe there is hope for my sheer sleeved 70's cocktail frocks afterall :spin:

This dress is not my cuppa tea either. I've seen the "real thing" at the exhibition in Paris last year, and I loved every dress. I can't understand why they had to reactivate the name simply as a brand. To me, this has nothing to do with Vionnet.

I couldn't agree more. Vionnet is probably my favorite designer, in my eyes she was an utter genius. I can't believe her name is being used this way. If there was ever such a thing as "fashion blasphemy" this would be it for me.
