To repair or not to repair??

I am not a seamstress unfortunately, but I always ponder if I should repair certain vintage pieces. I have had a piece or two professionally repaired.

Would there be specific pieces that shouldn't be touched?

Also, if you have an item like my 50s piece with either rhinestones or foil backs am I decreasing the value by not putting in newish rhinestones?

As of now, I have left the pieces as is. I am learning painfully that vintage items in fact can be fragile and my Maytag is too much. So as of now, I play it safe and clean what needs it and baby those that don't.
Regards and thanks!!!

I'm interested to see the responses also Denise.

I go with my gut or ask here about specific items. I also consider what I paid for something - if it wasn't a big investment I may try something I haven't done before and either succeed or consider it a learning experience - of course no matter what I paid, if it even remotely looks like some thing "special" I err on the side of caution and list as is for someone who is more skilled at restoration than I .

I think as long as it is a "cosmetic" repair, and keeps to the artist/ designer's original intent, it can't hurt.

That's my experience from the art world.
