To repair or not to repair...

Hi Everyone,

Question: When dealing with a designer item, is it better to leave an imperfection untouched or should you do your best to repair it?

I have a silk chiffon layered Oscar dress and there is a small tear in the silk near the base. Just wondering what the best course of action would be. In this circumstance, does repairing do more bad than good?

Thanks

Emily

I should have been more specific.

Would repairing (and by a professional seamstress) decrease the value of the piece.

I always have this dilemma. I just try and embrace my inner snob and wonder if *I* would wear it as is or with a repair. I would rather deal with a repair than stains. I Dont think repairs by someone who knows what they are doing should take from the dress, IMO. Its vintage and PERFECT is hard to come by IMHO.

IMO if I were selling a piece that was collector worthy (museum worthy) I would not repair and would let the collector resolve the issue. If I was selling a designer piece that does not fall into that collector worthy category, I would have the tear professionally repaired to prevent it from tearing further.
