Totally OT: Coney Island

This is for native New Yorkers and those who might visit this Summer. It's one of those places that if you're a native, you probably haven't been there since you were a kid and if you're a visitor it may be a place you never went to but have heard of. Thankfully the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel and I assume Nathan's are staying, but Astroland is part of the whole "experience" and this is Astroland's last year.

This is old Coney Island and if you have the chance to visit it one more time before it's gone, I suggest you do.

There are a lot of articles you can google about the closing. Here's one from The Gothamist.

That's too bad, there's big bucks in land development, but I hate to see good old things get trashed for modern cookie cutter crap. It's NYC, you should have things there you can't get everywhere else.
I was noticing on our weekend trip to Chicago, how many places were downtown that we have here in podunk-ville, or within a 30 min drive of here.

I heard they're shutting down CBGB's, too.

Who wouldn't want big box stores in place of Astroland!

SAD

CBGB's is already gone!

Yeah, it sucks. Being such a fan of vintage and old things in general I hate this even more than the average joe.

People in this area felt the same way last year when they tore bown the old Pavilion at Myrtle Beach. Whole lot of shagging (in more ways than one) went one in that place!

Very sad!
