Totally OT - Laser printer questions?

Now that the prices have come down on laser printers .... anybody have any recommendations? I gather they don't print color pictures as well as ink jets, but I am still interested. One consideration is the cost of replacement inks as well, of course ... and I'd like to find something $300ish... or less. Wishful thinking? Would I get what I paid for?

Thanks.

It sounds like you are considering a color laser printer. I don't have one of those, but I have been using a black and white laser for years. I used to use an Epson until it broke. It lasted several years. I've been using a Konica Minolta now for just over a year. It works perfectly, never a problem. The toner lasted a full year before I had to replace it. I have no use for a color printer. I only print business documents and postage.

I have an HP Laser B/W printer which I have been using for years now. It saves money on ink cartridges and the quality of print is better. The cartridges are more expensive but you get more bang for your dollar. Iam goig to dump my color cartidge printer too expensive and too many printing problems. I show my clients their comps on the comepter so I rarly need it anymore and will go to Kinko's if I need color prints....

Never had a color laser printer and would want to know how easy to trouble shoot problems with the printer...

How timely...my 6 year old inkjet is dying - it no longer will print yellow, so all my color prints are way off. I'm very interested to hear what everyone has to say about the laser printers.

I adore my HP black and white laser, it prints to the moon and back before needing a toner refill (knock on wood).

Epson is an excellent brand for color jet printers, I would assume they would be on the forefront of color laser technology. (just an assumption)
It would be nice to have a color printer that you didn't have to make sure got used every so often so the heads didn't seize up.

We buy the older laser printers for just black and white. You can imagine how much we print at the tax office and also print cashier's checks. We use HP or Epson. The last Epson we had lasted over 10 tax seasons. The toner is about $100 but it lasts forever. We replaced it with the same model and we got it off of Ebay for $40!! I think shipping was another $40.

mines so old and still works like a charm with crisp black print, perfect for postal delivery confirmation labels. its an old HP 1000, i've only had to buy 3 cartridges at $63 for it in prolly 5 yrs and use it daily. i love it. and i dont worry about my labels not scanning, or them getting wet and running, the laser ink doesnt.

i did run and get a VERY cheap lexmark Z645 for $19 at walmart a few weeks ago just for occasional color printing. the refils are $26. go figure. cheaper to buy a new printer.

BTW.. if you have a walgreens near you, they fill color or black and white cartridges for $15.

Does anyone have experience with color laser printers? That's what I really would need to get.

OfficeMax.com shows two - one for $549 (on sale) and one for $299. The more expensive one prints color pages a lot faster, but I could put up with only 4 pages per minute (the cheaper one) if it meant better quality than inkjet.

Quandries quandries. I have used my ancient Epson ink jet for printing color point of purchase cards off my plant supplier on the internet. Then I laminate them and use them for tags. I'm tempted to buy a laser printer for BW and another ink jet for color photos ... BUT .... if I didn't use the color much...?

I was sort of interested in THIS ONE but the more I look around the more possibilities emerge. Perhaps I will look on eBay. (Fancy that possibility :-)

I think that the Kinkos/Copymax style stores are using laser for color copies now. Might be worth poking a nose around there, just to see what brands they are using and the quality of output.

Wow, Amanda, I didn't even see that one while I was looking.

This is what I ordered... It had excellent magazine reviews, but some of the user reviews on Amazon left me a bit nervous. We'll see! It should be here within a week.

And be sure to let us know what you think of your new Xerox.

Laura - it will be interesting to compare. I got this from Small Dog Electronics which is a Vermont company ... the price was good - the same machine went as high as $600 in a few places. I really haven't a clue what I am doing - but my ink jet printer has really had the radish.

Just wanted to report - I love my new printer and I think the color is FINE in photographs for my needs. I haven't begun to figure out the bells and whistles. It is more noisy (and larger) than my other printer starting up - but man ... the quality is so much better.

So far I'm happy with mine, too. I was wary about printing on labels, because several reviews said there were problems with the ink on labels and at least 50% of my printing is in color on labels. But so far I haven't had any problems!

Actually, the only problem I have had is that the printing is *too* high quality - the logo on my invoice is pixelated because the quality is better than on my inkjet! I'm going to have to redo some of my things so they look better on the laser printer.

Overall, I'm thrilled with my printer.
