I am such a novice at this and wondering if anyone can help me with this piece. It is a Trifari butterfly pin - stamped Trifari (no crown) and also stamped Pat Pending.

My questions are - what are the materials, what is the age, and what is the value?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, ladieswholunch, that's the one! Any idea of its value?

Here's a picture of the back though I'm working on a better one...

Well its very pretty and looks in great condition for its age.. butterflies are popular and very wearable.. I'm not sure what the stones are... but 40's Trifari/Alfred Philippes is very collectible.. I've seen similar (but not exactly the same) Trifari brooches go for $50+ - saw one recently with rhinestones/peridots and citrine for $65..

Hope that helps!

I've been researching Trifari jewelry lately, as I have a lot of it to sell (but no Alfred Philippe, unfortunately), and the Philippe butterfly styles seem to be garnering quite a bit of money on sites like Ruby Lane, TIAS, and private sites. You won't get nearly as much on eBay for it as on one of those other sites. I can't see what the stones are... The whitish ones look like moonstones from what I can tell in the pics. Are the bottom ones faceted or cabochons?

Thanks, Anne! All the stones are cabochons but they have "leaves" at the bottom. I probably should try to zoom in on that for a picture. The whitish stones are clear (actually so are the blue). Thanks so much for your help.

Yogijudy--

I can't see the stones very clearly, but Trifari jewelry of that period often used molded glass stones known as "fruit salad" stones (they were inspired by the precious stone versions of Cartier...)

Here is a link to a 1941 fur clip at Jane Clarke's site that has blue fruit salad stones that seem to resemble yours:
