Trouble Dating \"Ann Taylor Original\" Day Dress

Having a hard time dating this dress. It's been shortened, probably by quite a bit, and the belt is not original. I keep thinking late 50's because of the label, collar style, and the look/feel of the fabric (cotton or cotton blend, and "feels" old to the touch, if you know what I mean--in excellent shape, but not crispy fresh), but am not sure... I may keep this for me, as I am a shorty, and this fits pretty well! Thanks!

Chris, there's about a 2" or a bit more hem allowance, maybe not the whole of the original length, but enough so it could be let down. If I keep it, I'll keep it as is.

It's really "cute" on, and perfect to sit open houses on the weekend. I work as a "cover" agent for a builder, on call for when sales managers have vacation or get sick, etc., and though I don't have to dress up, it's nice to have a few "throw on and go" things, and this little dress washed & dried with nary a wrinkle!

Tempted to sell, though, as it's an XL, and even day dresses in that size seem to be doing really well on eBay, and without a "name" label as this has.... So if I sell it'd be nice to know what the heck the dating is!

You should keep it! I know I am terrible as I always tell people to hang on to things but if it fits as is Anne then you really should. I love the little notched detail in the collar. :)

I think I would agree with you on date - if you imagine it a little longer with a self fabric belt?

well..you know..it is true that some things go for decent money, but if its just as hard finding something that fits you well, i would probably just sell something else. Day dresses do well in large sizes, but things can be pretty fickle as far as prints, etc. I would say if you are anticipating that it will go anywhere from $1 up to $50 dollars or so, that you keep it, because if you were trying to buy something modern that fit as well, and of that quality you would not be able to duplicate it for that price.

But i am a bad bad person so don't listen to me.

If it helps, I know I just checked in an Ann Taylor with that same tag of a 50s or darn near 50s cotton day dress. It's somewhere in a pile of over 100 days, don't ask me which one it is, but I remeber wondering if that was THE Ann Taylor we know now, since the dress was obviously older.

Oh, and if it fits and you love it, keep it. Sell something else!

Jenn, thanks for the info on the label, as that does help confirm the dating for me! And yes, it is the same Ann Taylor we know--according to our invaluable label resource, the brand has been around at least since the 50s, so my dress and the one "in the pile" must be pretty early examples!
