\"True Prep\" - a New Preppy Handbook

I suspect many of you will remember the original "Official Preppy Handbook" published in 1980!

This article from the NY Times was reprinted in the Honolulu Star Bulletin yesterday.

I looked on amazon and other sites for the original book and discovered that it's available but very pricey!

I thought it was supposed to be a bit of a joke at the time -- sort of the American version of the English Sloan ranger look. I recall it was all about pearls and cashmere pullovers, Bass weejuns and Brooks Brothers suits...

Interesting! I only became acquainted with the term and the style really through a book on vintage fashion a few years ago :BAGUSE: - but I hadn't known about this book and how it had been meant as a bit of joke. I like that side of it :).

Otherwise - this is one look that's definitely not for me - but thanks for posting this, now I think I actually get the whole idea/meaning of it better...

The book was meant as a joke when it was published. It was followed by "The Yuppie Handbook" - a few years later. I actually still have a copy of that book and it was definitely meant as a joke!

However, speaking for myself, I still prefer the "Preppy" classic Brook's Brothers/Ralph Lauren polo shirt look for men, although for the most part I find it the Preppy look too boring for women. My personal style is definitely routed in this look. In high school and college I wore plaid skirts, long sleeved blouses with button down or Peter Pan collars, with crew neck sweaters, knee socks and Bass penny loafers or Capezio or Pappagallo flats!

I was a junior in college when this was taken - very "Preppy!:

I have always liked "classic" clothing - in fact the majority of my vintage clothes are really
classic!

That Yuppie Handbook sounds like fun too! That photo of you is really cute!

lthough for the most part I find it the Preppy look too boring for women
That's a bit of my problem with it - or that's the reason why it's not for me :hysterical:. It's certainly nice if it fits you and if you can pull it off - but I'm just not the type I guess. Doesn't mean I don't like classic looks. :D
