Wow! that's some serious money.

I remember Diana wearing that black dress for her first offical outing. There was some hue and cry about it, partly because apparently royals shouldn't wear black unless in mourning, but mainly because it was pretty low cut and she flashed a lot of cleavage when bending forward to get out the car. The pictures of her 'wardrobe malfunction' were all over the papers the next day.

Wearing black was not limited to mourning prior to seeing Diana, Princess of Wales in that black dress. Queen Elizabeth 11 wore a black velvet evening gown at the Royal Film Performance of The Battle of the River Plate in 1956, in her capacity as Patron of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund. At this event The Queen met Marilyn Monroe. The Queen also wore a black dress on a State Visit to Italy in 1961. Enjoy the pictures;

This black dress worn by Diana was not the one she wore getting out of the limo showing too much cleavage. The whole story was written up in the Kerry Taylor catalogue -- apparently that dress was the beginning of the problems for Diana and the royal family. Charles had objected to the colour black because of its association with mourning but also because it was too sophisticated and sexy for his virgin fiancee. She had worn the dress for one occasion already but was already doing the one finger crash diet plan and took the dress into the Emmanuels to have it altered. Instead, because the dress was strapless and had to fit perfectly, they made her a completely new dress that looked identical. THAT dress is the one she was photographed in getting out of the car showing cleavage (I believe that dress was sold in the 1997 DIana dress sale that happened a month before she died). The dress that sold here was not the one she was photographed in -- and the new fashion museum in Santiago Chile bought it apparently and he has already said he has made plans to donate it back to the Spencer family museum upon his death.

On MM's costume, it's one of my favourites and I've seen the famous scene many times but never have I noticed that the pink bow is trimmed in black! I did a bit of googling and found that it was true: how about that? I guess the appeal of La Monroe was sufficient to distract me from one of her most famous gowns.
