It looks much like what used to be called Marquisette, but the pattern is slightly more hexagonal than most I have seen. I do think you could safely call it marquisette, and that was a very popular fabric in the early half of the 20th century for lingerie and lightweight summer gowns. Plus it sounds so very French!
I think it's too heavy to be marquisette which is closer to netting. I'm fairly sure that this is an example of marquisette, found on a stunning 1930's gown in the UH Historic Costume Collection.
Sorry the photo isn't closer but you can see how fine the fabric is. This is one of my two all-time favorite pieces from the '30's Collection!
That is a gorgeous set! It looks like a rayon machine knit fabric...wish I could help you with the naming of it.
I have had items made of this in the past, the only thing I find is that it easily pulls if you are wearing jewelry.
I went back and looked at this again, and it does look different than a net, and has a larger scale than Marquisette, so Linn you are probably right on that. And it could be a knit fabric and not a weave. I would need an extreme close up to tell that. Whatever it is it is lovely.
