Hello Everyone,

Ive been quiet but things are going well. My shop is selling pretty solidly and I think I have gotten a feel for where, when and how to find what I need and get it posted and sold *smile*. But now... Im onto hats. Pictured is a leather stove top / top hat Scully's by Henschel with a Union label United States Cap and Millinery Workers Union. Id post a picture of the label but the lettering is so light, it does not show at all. It is a thick paper like label, sown into the stitching. Could you take a stab at dating this please?

I researched a lot about this but labels like this one appear to be associated with

the 30s and that just cant be.

we would need closer photos of the hat itself, and any pictures of the label or other markings is better than none at all, if the lettering is too light try darkening it in something like photobucket/photoshop. Although it may show up for somebody else's screen anyway.

A leather topper? Looks very hippie to me, late 60s - 70s. 1930s does seem awfully wrong. Union labels do have a long life span, so they are really best for dating first and last possible use.

Actually, when I went to go look at the hat, the label photographs fine, and here are the shots. Sorry about that, it was s different hat that refused to allow the label photographed and I mixed up the two. I already found the info I needed on the other hat. The label to me looks 60s / 70ish in style. It seems to be made out of a canvas like material (the label not the hat) Let me know your thoughts please.

Yes Hollis I agree and really my shop collection is more Hippie / Rock n Rock more than anything else. But when I read about that particular label it said 30s so I was confused.

I have two of these hats and have Contacted Henschel but they can't find when they did those hats. but Agree they were from the 70's at best.
the font for the words on the union able was font used in marketing at the time in the 70's I was told by one label maker for Union tags on garments in NY.
The Leather is very high end latago leather The two i have one is the same color but a medium size.
The other same size but some dyed it black badly.. I have them made up for Steampunk cosplay now. I made leather belts into hat bands for them.
The two hats cost about $35 each off ebay our is about the 4th i have seen. Can't find any listing in any older catalog for hat retailers at all.
They are all hand made and cut the same so Henschel had to have made them in lots but not for too long or there would be more found i feel.
They need sweat band in them i feel . A bit heavy at some time but have great effect and are very cool hats.
the black one is going to get some re-dying work to get it into a better shape. the uncolor one will stay as is. I using Fiebing's 4 way care as it is really good on leather items and will not damage them and keep them from drying out.

These cool had just wish could find how long they were made and about how made they did. these could be a rare hat if they did under 10,00 to 20,00 of them. If anyone find out more i love to find out more.
