I'm not entirely sure I did or did not like Zack and Miri Make a Porno....I suppose I didn't feel cheated out of my money, and the popcorn was good.
OK, I'm being too hard on it (snickers from the peanut gallery). There were a lot of really funny parts, some good sincere parts, and some raunchy sex humor. I was prepared for that, and it was far from Boogie Nights, the "other movie" about making porn.
It centers around life long friends who come up with a far fetched plan to turn their lives around with the cash from making a porn. The process brings up other feelings, and that part of the story is endearing. Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks play those parts well.
The rest of the cast has Katie Morgan, a real porn actress, who is actually pretty good; Traci Lords, former porn star turned legit, with a bit of techno music recording thrown in; Craig Robinson, from The Office, as the straight man (comedy wise, not, well, you know); and of course, since this is a Kevin Smith movie, you get Jeff Anderson and Jason Mewes from Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy...and most of the rest of Kevin Smith's movies. Thank goodness Ben Affleck didn't show up.
It was sweet, and dirty, then sweet, then a bit slow, then gross, then funny. I don't think it will reign as a classic, like When Harry Met Sally, which it has been compared to, but all in all, if you are not offended by the sexy-sexy, tatas or winkies (not Rogan's thank goodness!) then it rates an ok.
It is most certainly NOT for the young and impressionable. It deserves its R rating, which had to be lobbied down from an NC17, supposedly without any cut-outs.

PS, I thought it was funny when the theater clerk had to quietly ask if we were aware of the film's subject. She said they were not allowed to put the full title on the marquee or in the newspaper listing or the web/email info.
I felt bad for her, but could see she was grateful that we understood and she didn't have to explain.
Wish they'd asked if I was aware a few of the other films I've paid for sucked. (snickers from the peanut gallery yet again)
