Unusual fur/hair stole, muff and cuffs

Hello :)

I'm new here but I can't wait to contribute and enjoy reading everyone's wonderful posts.

I have a conundrum that I'm hoping can be solved.

I recently bought a stole, muff and cuffs set that was retailed by (the now defunct) Bourne &a Hollingsworth of London in 1936.

I have owned and do own a lot of different furs over the years but this one has defeated me.

The pelts used are large, and continuous - cut down to size. The pelt is covered in what I can only describe as hair more than fur. It fairly coarse and dense to the touch and has an agouti colouration to it...in this case: light orange/blond at the roots, dark to black and then white flecked tips.

Certain parts of the pelt are very coarse and black - especially on the cuffs.

The hair/fur strands are approx 3" in length.

I've had all sorts of suggestions thrown at me but the closest I can find is Baboon!! Is anyone able to confirm for me a definite ID? It's unlike anything else I own...and very itchy!

Many thanks for looking and for any help you can provide :)

You are WONDERFUL! That is absolutley SPOT ON. Even down to the way the coarser hair (?) on the legs meets the softer on the back and sides of the animal.

I'm so glad you could shed light on this as we had imagined it was some sort of primate.

I wonder how it ended up in England!!

@Panzerwraith your imagination was leading you on the right path.

This type of monkey fur is not seen in garments often these days so it's not one that would be easily recognized.

As for how it got to England isn't too much of a wonder. Export and import has helped to make fur types available everywhere.
