Update on the Holt Renfrew Chanel jacket

This is the response I got from Chanel after asking them if they ever had an agreement to make adaptations of their designs for Holt Renfrew....I wrote to Holt Renfrew but received no answer.

"Thank you for your e-mail.

We regret to say that, as a matter of corporate policy, CHANEL can no longer provide verbal or written authentication of products.

The explosion of sales of items purported to be CHANEL and frequently counterfeit over the Internet, especially through auction sites such as eBay, has led to a dramatic increase in requests for authentication. Unfortunately, CHANEL can no longer accommodate the volume of requests for authentication through its Boutiques, department store accounts or at its corporate offices.

Vendors of counterfeit CHANEL goods are unscrupulous. Some such vendors have been saying falsely in Internet auctions and other postings that the item up for sale was "authenticated" by CHANEL. In order for CHANEL to be in a position to say that such a statement is false, we cannot provide any verbal authentications, and can only provide written authentications under very specific circumstances.

Additionally, we cannot provide the public with detailed information on ways to identify genuine CHANEL goods, since counterfeiters could also use this information to improve their products.

CHANEL is not responsible for the authenticity of items not purchased from an authorized CHANEL vendor. For a list of all authorized CHANEL fashion locations, please visit our Store Locator listed at www.chanel.com.

CHANEL works diligently to protect its reputation for providing the highest quality products and to protect its valued customers from fraud.
CHANEL constantly monitors the Internet and bricks-and-mortar locations for counterfeit CHANEL items.

We apologize for any inconvenience and hope that you will not be deterred from enjoying many excellent and authentic CHANEL products."

If the difference between a real and fake Chanel was only the lack of knowledge by the counterfeiter then that doesn't say much for the real product or the research capabilities of the counterfeiter! I can understand them saying they no longer authenticate Chanel products due to volume, but they should at least have a website that explains the fundamental traits of Chanel and a history of the label. Keeping the public stupid is an arrogant way of giving yourself more power.

I can understand not wanting to authenticate because of volume, but asking if a Holt Renfrew is an adaptation is more of an "archival/history" question and not a straight "is this fake."

If you sent photos in before, would suggest sending another note, not in reply, but start from scratch. Eliminate any attachments. Even use a different email so you won't be spit out right away. Ask if historically, and name the decade, if Chanel allowed Holt Renfrew to adapt their designs or actually made adaptations for Holt Renfrew. Reiterate that you are looking for historical information and not authentication. If the subject asked about Holt Renfrew, title it "Chanel History Question" instead and see what happens.

If that is the way you originally phrased your question, then I am not sure how I would proceed next.

Well, it's not much of an answer, is it? Sounds like a canned response to whatever questions they may receive about Chanel items that fall outside their "official" channels.

I agree with Chris's (patentleathershoes) answer--I'd try again from scratch. And I think you might have better luck with Holt Renfrew if you e-mailed them again. I've found the couple of times I've e-mailed a large company for information, it takes a very, very long time to get a reply, but they have replied!

You might have better luck contacting Linton Tweeds (check what I wrote on your first post) whose manufacturing history is well recorded. As I said this jacket could be a sample piece. Their close association with Chanel and fashion retailers in North America would suggest to me that they could pin-point the origin of this jacket.

I will guarantee that you will not have any luck from Holt Renfrew. There is no corporate memory there at all because they have changed hands a couple of times. They almost went out of business in the late 1970s and were sold at that point and they were resold again in the mid 90s, I think it was. The company has been reinvented several times and any old employees are long retired or dead. Christian Dior has the information about their agreement with Holt Renfrew in their archives, and it is likely the same is true for Chanel, but I have heard from more than one source that getting any information out of the Chanel archives is not easy. Didn't Claire say that she had problems getting them to admit they worked with Davidow in New York? Their association was well publicized at the time, but Chanel wish it had never happened...

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful replies. I believe I will try again "from scratch" with Chanel, asking from a historical perspective. Great idea.

I asked Chanel from a more historical perspective this time, if they ever had done adaptations for Holt renfrew, and here is their reply....

"Thank you for your e-mail requesting information on Chanel, Inc. Since
CHANEL is a privately owned company, we are unable to provide
proprietary and/or marketing information.

Thank you for your interest in CHANEL."

I will try contacting Linton Tweeds to see if they may be able to help.

Here is what I got back from Linton Tweeds....

Thank you for email, unfortunately we wouldn't have a clue, we just
supply Chanel with the fabric we know nothing about their manufacturing
process. Sorry we couldn't be of more help.

So, I guess if I want to sell the jacket, I will have to state that it is surmised that it was an adaptation by Chanel for the departments store, Holt Renfrew, but it is unable to be verified.

Even if this was an authorized adaptation I don't think it would have Chanel logo buttons. I've seen many Davidow Chanel adaptations but they don't have labels that say so, and I've never seen one with double C buttons. Chanel has had a trademark on the logo since the 1920s. Honestly looks like a button swap to me.
