Vacation plans & shopping for vintage?

Well, it's that time of year when many of us have made, or are making, our summer vacation plans. Do you plan your vacation spots around where you can go "shopping" for vintage? Or do you plan to include some side forays to shop? Do you take vacation day trips to shop?

We usually manage to find local antique co-ops wherever we go on vacation, or in those years when we can't take a "real" vacation, we generally take a day trip or two to check out new places to forage for resale stock and things for our own collections.

This year we're going to Wildwood Crest, the southern-most part of the Jersey Shore Wildwoods. We love being away from the boardwalk (though we always take the kids there for at least one day), and we love that it is just a few minutes' drive from Cape May, an historic town at the southern tip of the state. The East Coast folks here likely know of it; for those of you on the West Coast, Cape May is a delightful town that you can walk around all day and look at the shops, walk on the beach, etc. And, it is LOADED with antiques & collectibles shops!

So, please, share your plans that may include shopping or even just looking. Or stories about great finds you've made while checking out shops while you've been vacationing.

My best buy on vacation so far was a piece of porcelain ware I bought on our honeymoon in Niagara-on-the-Lake. I enjoyed it for several years, and it was one of the first things I ever sold on eBay. Made a nice profit on it and had an appreciative buyer. Of course, now it would go great in the house we have, and I wish I had it back!!!!

Most of the other things I've bought while on vacation are still sitting in my stock room to be listed!!!!!

Actually -- that's what I'm doing this weekend!

We're heading up to the Sacramento area (about 7 hours from here) and plan on hitting all the little "old town" sections of Auburn & Placerville tomorrow and the big Folsom Antique Fair on Sunday.

Merchandise shopping is always near the top of any criteria for vacation spots ;)

Kristine,

SAC has one of those Goodwill by the Pound stores. It is in an iffy part of town, but I have scored some good stuff there.

Also a nice Cancer Society store in SAC that has an annual vintage weekend sale. Check to see if it might be on this weekend, it is really great & worthwhile.

A few years ago I scheduled a visit to my 95-year-old step-mother in Pennsylvania specifically around a huge hospital rummage sale I read about on the web. I even booked a motel near the grounds.

I made the mistake of going to the "upscale clothes" building and waiting in line with people who came in large teams to pick. Almost everything had flaws. I then went to the main building and got tons of great stuff.

Right now I am trying to schedule my workload and employees around my forays to spring rummage sales.

I dont plan vacations around them, but i do love shopping in each city i'm at. When we were in Hawaii, one of our first "tourist stops" was a little thrift store.

Melissa and i do love taking road trips on weekends to see small towns and always, always always hit the estate sales in that city.

Please tell me about the "little trift store" - I've never had any luck at the Trift's except for a few pieces of jewelry years ago.

I schedule trips to SF around shows. I usually go twice a year to SF for the Deco Show and went to the Vintage Fashion Expo last month. I shop wherever I go.....

Aloha,

I shop wherever I go.....

That's the spirit! DH & always end up dragging the kids into almost every little antique shop, big antique mall, or flea market we stumble upon on vacation. But what's really cool is that they are now starting to enjoy it! They love garage sale-ing!

Well....

We plan to go up to Boulder City (which is about 30 minutes from home) to the Arts Festival this weekend, but the coolest part is the little junque shoppes there & on the way.

Later this summer, we're visiting New Orleans. I haven't been since the mid-90's, & since we may be moving back there in December, I think I need to visit first to be sure it 'feels' right. Point is - while there, I will try to hit all the way cool little junque shoppes just outside of the Quarter as well as my 2 fave thrift shoppes there.

I love Cape May. I did real well with a coat I found in a shop up there a few years ago I remember. Quaint little town. This is a great thread. Ill post later(Grey Gardens just started)

We're really looking forward to spending the better part of a day in Cape May. We haven't been to the "Joisey" Shore in about 4 years, and last time we were there, our youngest boy wasn't feeling well, and if recall, we went down there but only spent a couple hours. Seems to me the prices were pretty high in the shops we stopped at, but we didn't get a chance to see much.... It'll be full throttle ahead when we go in June!

Someday DH & I are going to leave the kids home and spend a quiet romantic weekend at a B & B in Cape May..... Sunsets on the beach, lunch in a quaint restaurant, and shopping, of course! I'm SO glad he's got the bug as bad as I do.

Linn, i think it was on Oahu? cant remember exactly, other than it was across the street from a black sand beach.

We wanted to go to Hawaii, couldnt narrow down which island, so did the "American Hawaiian Cruise".
it was fabulous, each morning we'd wake at a different island. Loved every minute. We didnt realize they had theme events on the ship, and ran to a few thrifts for "costumes". I know we scored with things for a 50s night, and of course maxi dresses for Hawaiian night. it was a darling little independant shop.

Anne, i starte my kids on "collections" at your kids age. I'd give them each a bit of money, and they would search for things to add to their collection. Allana now has the most amazing purse collection she started at age 6, Melissa has a wonderful collection of vintage glass candy containers.

it kept them quiet, gave them a "mission" and they never griped if we stopped at an antique mall or flea market.

Von -

The shop must have been on the Big Island - maybe near Kona. All the beaches on Oahu are white sand. Sounds like a fun trip and good for you getting your kids interested in vintage at an early age.
