very confused by this dress

Hello all :)

Found this little black dress the other day. Everything about it except the length says 50's to me. Oh, and the fact that it has 80's style shoulderpads. It has a side metal zipper closure (Conmar). It's made from crepe rayon. The hem really doesn't look like it was altered however and the shoulder pads also didn't look added in. So, yeah... i'm confused. It is quite pretty though. (if short) :)

oooh! yeah, that could be it? The shoulderpads are still weird - they are more of an 80s shoulder pad, but I guess they could have been added. :)

I agree that it could be to wear over a skirt. It looks late '40s to early '50s.

Do you have pics of the inside hem and the shoulder pads?

I call the skirt treatment ruching but on ebay I've seen it called "coffin pleats" (urgh).

I guess it could be part of a suit, but i deffinately say late 40s. I have had some pretty thick triangular 40s pads and some thinner soft round ones.

Is it possible that the skirt was shortened? Perhaps repurposed in the 80s? ahhh the horror!

I think this was shortened too. But, gosh, those pleats are marvelous!

I actually like the term coffin pleats because it is a perfect description. Exactly the right image :-) though morbid things fascinate me and not scare!

Pimp it out as a sexy vintage witch for halloween! But don't let anyone ruin it :-)

Thanks everyone! :) I think 40's it is then. I just haven't ever seen shoulderpads so big in a 40's shirt. :) I'm guessing this could be worn as a mini dress, too.

Coffin pleats! Wow. Interesting :)

It could be a tunic top for a skirt set with added shoulder pads from the late 40 s- 50s. It could also be a 1940s/50s dress shortend in the 80s, which did happen a lot.
