Ok I am going to have to call on your expertise here. I have been out of the vintage loop for a while, but as my collection is beginning to take over my entire house I have decided to sell off a few pieces.

First off is this Victorian cape. It is damaged so it is more of a cutter/ study piece, but it was sold to me as velvet and from the moment I opened the box I was 99.9% sure it was fur, but what type fur? This being particularly important because of the restrictions on selling certain types of fur.

It is also particuarly important because this cape has always creeped me out. From the moment I opened the box I got a bad feeling and did not want it in the house. As such procrastination has earned it 3 good years here. My mother though swears every time you open the cupboard it is in you feel an icy cold chill.

In any case any thoughts are much appreciated.

I like it!
It really looks like some type of velevt because it does not even look plush enough to be seal or beaver, maybe it had a fur trim at some point?
Please let me know if/when you list it (or just sell it to me, heheh)

You can tell if it is animal fur if you unpick the lining - assuming there is one - and find skin. From that you should be able to see if the cape/capelet (it's hard to see from your photo) was sewn together using pelts. If it is velvet you will see the woven backing.

Thanks everyone I am going to go have a look now as there are places, sadly, where the lining has come away. I don't buy a lot of fur so I will admit my total ignorance about it.

Julie, you know you are right there is just something spooky about it, and it is not just because it is old I have other Victorian pieces that don't bother me one bit.

Well I just had a look and believe it or not it is velvet, I don't know why I was so convinced it was fur. It still has a label in it too, I wonder if anyone has ever heard of the store.
