This is beyond my scope of practice! STUNNING Hand glass beaded and applique jacket. The beading is done in a floral motif with a large Iris & butterfly scene on the back. Ideas??? THANK YOU!

That's an unusually pretty black beaded piece. The sleeve style with the puffed shoulder, deep pointed front bodice and short back, and the Art nouveau influenced beadwork style all look very late 1890s to me -- 1899ish. Are there any markings on the backs of the buttons or a label? It looks sufficiently peculiar to me to suggest it might be French.
I wonder what the skirt that went with it originally was like!?!?!!?!

Jonathan, Thank you! Yes, it is very unusual and gorgeous. I was thinking French as well. I have a 20's beaded flapper dress from France with the same beads. This comes from a collector who called me to her house last week. She very well may have the skirt as she has 100's of pieces from this era all of very high quality. Some are in very bad condition but a few are excellent like this piece. I'll go back on Monday to see if I can find the skirt. She is eager to move some of her collection, they are family pieces.

I can't help you, just wanted to say: Wow :cheer: – fantastic – what a beautiful piece!
And it looks to be in a great condition too!!
Can't help wondering about the craftmanship and hours it must have taken making something like this...

Sille,

I know, can you imagine the work that went into this piece? It really is a piece of art, I am in love with the Iris motif on the back!

Yes, soooo pretty – and there is something about the cut of the jacket and the motifs together that just works so well...
:-) Beatiful!

I could not help but laugh when I read Jonathan's line! Better not utter that line here in the French part of Canada - Quebec!

It is a lovely piece!

Thank you all for your input on this beautiful piece! I went back and spent time with the woman who owns this piece this week and we couldn't find the skirt. However we dug out many similar pieces that are almost as fantastic. You just never know what people have in their basements! :)

Hi, How lovely! It looks to me like the bodice to a "reception" dress - wonder if it has boning (stays) on the inside? Hope you find the skirt! Sue

So beautiful! Alas, California is truly a desert when it comes to earlier vintage. When that jacket was made, this was literally the wild west, and those miners and farmers and Ohlone Indians just weren't so much into fashion. Dangit!
