Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help me? I always get excited when i find old clothes but I am a klutz about military stuff. I think this might be really old. The main seams are machined as i discovered when I looked at a mend at the back... but it seems to be almost totally hand stitched. The hooks look individually made weird as that seems (doesn't tie in with the machining) and buckle on the back also looks quite artisan made. It's stamped "british" (one stamp) and m.a.d.e. (seperate letter stamps).
The patch on the front covers up a nasty stain- I don't really want to take it off but if this was really old then i guess I should.
This is such a great pirate style waistcoat, I want to keep it and wear it if its not worth much- but also want to sell it if its perhaps valuable. I'd like to know a bit more about it in any case. Thanks so much for any thoughts, Vanessa

I am at a total loss on this one but I am sure someone will come along soon who knows.

Those types of hooks and eyes are around throughout the 19th century so its kind of hard to date them. I don't know military really well either so I can't help much... sorry.

Oh well, at least I am pretty sure its victorian. Or edwardian! Thanks for having a look. I know millitary uniforms are very specialised.... Vanessa
